Job Description:
 The Business Development Manager is responsible for driving new business acquisition and revenue growth within designated industry verticals. The role focuses on developing deep sector expertise, building executive-level relationships, and positioning Payfast's payment, collection, subscription, marketplace, payout, and value-added solutions to enterprise and mid-market merchants.

The BDM will act as a vertical specialist, identifying market opportunities, understanding industry-specific challenges, and partnering with internal stakeholders to deliver tailored payment solutions that drive merchant growth and commercial success.




Responsibilities:
 New Business Development

  • Identify, engage and acquire new merchants within assigned industry verticals.
  • Build and maintain a robust pipeline of enterprise and mid-market opportunities.
  • Develop and execute targeted account acquisition strategies.
  • Manage the full sales cycle from prospecting through to contract execution and handover.
  • Consistently achieve revenue, merchant acquisition and transaction volume targets.
  • Upsell, cross-sell and solution to existing base.

Vertical Specialisation

  • Develop deep expertise within assigned sectors such as: 
    • Retail
    • Gaming & Betting
    • Financial Services & Regulated Markets
    • Ecommerce
    • Marketplaces
    • Subscription Businesses
    • Education
    • Travel & Hospitality
    • Other strategic verticals identified by Payfast
  • Understand industry trends, customer pain points, regulatory considerations and emerging opportunities.
  • Act as the internal subject matter expert for the vertical.
  • Provide market intelligence and competitive insights to leadership, product and commercial teams.

Enterprise Sales & Solutioning

  • Engage executive and decision-making stakeholders including founders, executives, finance, operations and technology leaders.
  • Position Payfast's full suite of products and capabilities.
  • Work closely with Solutions, Product, Risk, Compliance and Operations teams to develop tailored customer solutions.
  • Identify opportunities for cross-sell and multi-product adoption.
  • Participate in client workshops, solution design sessions and executive presentations.

Relationship Management

  • Develop trusted advisor relationships with prospective clients.
  • Establish strong networks within industry associations and relevant business communities.
  • Represent Payfast at industry events, conferences and networking opportunities.
  • Develop strategic relationships that create long-term growth opportunities.

Sales Excellence

  • Maintain accurate pipeline management and forecasting.
  • Update CRM systems in line with company standards.
  • Track market activity, competitor movements and industry developments.
  • Deliver regular sales performance updates and pipeline reviews.

Experience / Skills Required

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Relevant Degree, Diploma or equivalent commercial experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of B2B sales or business development experience.
  • Minimum 3 years experience selling technology, fintech, payments, SaaS or ecommerce solutions.
  • Proven track record of achieving and exceeding sales targets.
  • Experience selling into enterprise and mid-market organisations.
  • Strong understanding of complex solution sales and consultative selling methodologies.
  • Excellent negotiation and commercial structuring skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management and executive engagement capability.
  • Ability to identify market opportunities and build industry-specific sales strategies.
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Highly self-motivated and results-driven.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally across Product, Operations, Risk, Finance and Marketing teams.

Preferred Experience

  • Payments, acquiring, fintech or ecommerce experience.
  • Existing relationships within assigned industry verticals.
  • Knowledge of online payments, subscriptions, recurring billing, collections, payouts, marketplaces and embedded payment solutions.
  • Experience selling to C-Suite, executive and senior leadership stakeholders.
  • Understanding of regulated industries and compliance requirements.
