Job Summary:

The BI Report Developer Lead leads the team of Power BI report developers who build the reports and dashboards used by stakeholders across the Inspire Brands portfolio, including Dunkin’, Arby’s, Sonic, Jimmy John’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Baskin Robbins. The Lead is both a hands on report builder and the manager and mentor of the team, setting the technical bar for what good looks like in Power BI at Inspire.

This role plans the team’s work, partners with the data modeling team and business stakeholders, and is accountable for the quality, performance, and on time delivery of the reports the team produces. The team’s reports support more than 22,000 restaurants, so reliability, accuracy, and ease of use are non negotiable. Day to day, the Lead reviews team members’ DAX and visual work, gives feedback, unblocks people, and personally owns the most complex or high visibility reports.

The Lead is responsible for hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development of the report developers on the team. The Lead represents the team in conversations with senior leadership and the brands, and translates business priorities into a clear backlog of work for the developers. Success is measured by the adoption of the reports the team produces, the development of the people on the team, and the quality of the decisions those reports help our brands and franchisees make.

This position reports to the Senior Director of Business Intelligence.
Responsibilites:

  • Lead the team of Power BI report developers, including planning their work, prioritizing across brands, and balancing ad hoc requests with longer term initiatives.

  • Manage the developers on the team day to day, including one on ones, performance feedback, growth plans, and career development conversations.

  • Mentor team members on Power BI craft, including report design, DAX, performance tuning, and stakeholder communication.

  • Review team members’ work before release, providing feedback that improves both the report and the developer.

  • Build the most complex, sensitive, or high visibility Power BI reports yourself, setting an example for the team’s quality bar.

  • Partner with the data modeling team and business stakeholders to align on requirements, semantic model changes, and report scope.

  • Set and maintain team standards for visual design, naming, documentation, row level security, and deployment.

  • Own the team’s intake process, prioritization, and delivery commitments, and be accountable for what the team ships.

  • Hire new report developers and onboard them onto the team, the tools, and Inspire’s data landscape.

  • Communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs to the Senior Director of Business Intelligence and to senior business stakeholders.

  • Monitor adoption, performance, and quality of the team’s reports, and drive improvements where the data shows they are needed.

  • Stay current on Power BI features, share useful capabilities with the team, and decide when to bring new techniques into the team’s standard practice.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS or ABILITIES

  • Minimum: 7+ years of Power BI report development experience, with at least 1 year leading or formally mentoring other developers.

  • Preferred: 10+ years of BI experience, including prior time as a manager or team lead in a multi brand, retail, restaurant, or franchise setting.

  • Strong hands on experience with Power BI Desktop, the Power BI service, deployment pipelines, and the Power BI mobile app.
  • Deep DAX skills, including time intelligence, advanced filter context, calculation groups, and performance tuning.

  • Proven ability to give clear, kind, and useful feedback to other developers on their work.

  • Solid SQL skills, with the ability to read complex queries, profile sources, and validate report numbers against the underlying data.

  • Experience setting and maintaining technical standards, code review practices, and team conventions.

  • Strong eye for visual design, including layout, color, typography, and the principles of effective data visualization.

  • Comfort with people leadership tasks, including one on ones, performance reviews, growth plans, and difficult conversations.

  • Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to brief executives, demo work, and document what was built.

  • Strong prioritization skills, with the ability to make tradeoffs across brands and competing requests.

  • Familiarity with row level security, workspace governance, and Power BI administration at a team scale.

What We Do

Inspire Brands was founded in February 2018 with a vision to invigorate great brands and supercharge their long-term growth. In an industry facing increasing disruption, our leaders saw an opportunity to build a restaurant company unlike any other – one that brings together differentiated yet complementary brands and aims to make them stronger than they would be on their own. Found inherently in the purposes of our family of brands, we identified a common thread between our restaurants – the capacity to inspire. From guest experience to career development to community well-being, Inspire plays a role in the lives of millions of people every day.
