Job Title: BCAN Community Engagement Specialist

Reports to : Executive Director, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Work Schedule: 35 hours/week; 12 months/year

Grade: 5

Hourly Range: $22.80 - $28.46

Summary of Essential Functions: The BCAN Community Engagement Manager is the lead storyteller, digital media content strategist, and relationship builder for the MICA Baltimore Creatives Acceleration Network, a city-wide initiative advancing the economic empowerment of Baltimore creatives by providing holistic and strategic entrepreneurship support. The position requires a driven, creative, and collaborative visionary with a strong voice for narrative building, attention to detail, and a distinct capacity for storytelling and community relations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Content & Engagement Strategy (10%)

    • Collaborate with leadership and MICA’s Strategic Communications to create, implement and iterate the content and engagement strategies for BCAN including identifying needs and opportunities, targeting distribution channels and outreach (including social media), campaign ideation and execution, and evaluation in alignment with BCAN’s overarching and programmatic goals.

    • Craft, establish and fine tune BCAN brand narrative, messaging and positioning across channels ensuring cohesion, a bold voice and consistent visual aesthetic that represents the brand’s direction and personality.

    • Analyze and report on channel performance and adapt strategy accordingly.

  • Content Development (50%)

    • Manage, plan and maintain editorial content calendar and deadlines to ensure BCAN channels are regularly and strategically updated, consider and include programming goals, social media campaigns, niche and national holidays, milestones, and are accurate and error-free.

    • Work in collaboration with BCAN designers, freelancers and leadership team to generate and deliver creative, compelling, consistent, press-ready copy and content for BCAN with a focus on storytelling for use in email, website, social media, videos, press releases, sponsorship packages, informational and promotional materials.

    • Project manage the creation of digital and print promotional materials for BCAN programs and events; coordinate needs, priorities, production and distribution with team; track project progress; manage outreach to guest speakers and featured creatives to source material such as bios, headshots, product photos, logos, etc.

    • Ensure BCAN and its programs have high quality photo, video, and written documentation, including identifying service providers (designers, photographers, videographers) as needed, and maintaining organized archives at the ready.

    • Work with web designer and BCAN team to refresh website.

  • Digital & Social Media Management (15%)

    • Plan, schedule and activate BCAN’s social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Eventbrite, Zoom, and inform emergent platform adaptation.

    • Update BCAN’s website event and resource pages.

    • Promote BCAN and its programs via social media and on the ground.

    • Research and cross-promote opportunities and tools that support creative entrepreneurs via BCAN’s channels.

  • Public Relations & Engagement (15%)

    • Generate and steward local and national press relationships on behalf of BCAN, craft press releases, pitch stories to press, maintain press kits, generate media talking points, keep press and VIP contact lists up to date, and press archives organized.

    • Establish, assess and strengthen relationships with audience and community partners via social media campaigns, amplification of creatives via blog and vlog, development of membership community, direct outreach, surveys, engagement tracking, etc. Attend community events on behalf of BCAN and actively engage with BCAN audience and influencers both in person and online.

    • Establish and strengthen brand partnerships with organizations and entrepreneurs BCAN shares values with eg. co-developing or co-branding resources, co-hosting talks.

  • Program Support (10%)

    • Contribute to brainstorming programming ideas and support the programming team with communications, relationship stewardship, recruitment and evaluation needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understand the challenges of systematic impacts of racism on Black, Indigenous + People of Color.

  • Commitment to creating a culture of accountability, respect and reciprocity.

  • Excellent written, oral, and visual communication skills.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with social media platforms, content management software including Squarespace, Mailchimp, Sprout, Asana, Adobe Creative Suite, Gsuite.

  • Strong business acumen and familiarity with creative entrepreneurship.

  • Impeccable organizational and time management skills and ability to manage deadlines.

  • Interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work both remotely and in person.

  • Self-starter who is comfortable in setting goals and priorities.

Minimum qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of experience in communications and public relations.

  • Experience working with designers, freelancers, and media outlets.

  • Education: BA in Communications or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Baltimore and its creative community.

  • Passion for entrepreneurship.

Reporting to this position: Freelance designers, photographers, videographers, writers and interns as needed.

  • Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment. (additional training may be added, SEE: EHS Manager training schedule).
