Please note that this role is in the San Francisco Bay Area. 

Our office comes alive on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays! Three times a week, our Bay Area team gathers in our office located in San Francisco's Financial District (580 California St) for All Hands meetings, collaborative sessions, innovation-driven brainstorming, and events that bring us closer together. Our space has everything we need—from cozy rooms for 1:1 mentoring and focused work to larger rooms designed for team activities.


About the role

As an Engineering Manager at Academia.edu, your people management skills will shine, both through mentoring and coaching the members of your team, and also through designing people processes for the wider engineering organization. You will drive a team of talented engineers to success, collaborating closely with your Product Manager to influence product trajectory. At Academia.edu you won’t receive narrowly-defined requirements and milestones from the product team, like taking a ticket. Instead, you’ll own prioritizing engineering projects to achieve larger business objectives. When your team gets stuck, you’ll use your experience and problem solving skills to get them unstuck. You’ll also hop into hiring, helping to continue to grow our organization with highly-skilled and kind people. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 4-8 engineers at various stages of their careers, who are responsible for 1 or 2 specific areas of our product. 
  • Conduct weekly 1:1 meetings to work on professional development and performance management with each member of your team.
  • Recruit and hire highly talented - and kind - software engineers.
  • Prioritize engineering projects and tasks within your product area in collaboration with the Product Manager and Associate Director of Engineering.
  • Monitor engineering deliverables for your team members, and coach engineers as needed to ensure timely progress. Communicate progress to other stakeholders as needed.
  • Design improvements to engineering organization people processes, such as creating leveling tables, career pathing, performance management structures, etc.
  • Occasional coding, such as bug fixes and lower priority tasks, primarily as a way to deeply understand the team’s work

Requirements

  • Experience managing an engineering team for at least 4 years
  • Experience managing a team that had at least 5 engineers on it at the same time for more than a year
  • Experience defining and prioritizing engineering projects to reach product roadmap goals 
  • Experience hiring high-performing software engineers
  • Ability to work within an environment where product roadmaps are in flux - and the skills to add helpful structures to help our engineering org mature
  • Strong hands-on engineering background and technical competency. While this role will not involve major hands-on coding, you will need to be actively involved in prioritizing projects and monitoring progress, which will require a strong technical understanding

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a B2C digital product 
  • Experience managing engineering teams at more than one company
