Backend Java Engineer (all genders)

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT 

Software Design & Development 

• Design, build, and maintain scalable, maintainable, and high-performing backend software. 

• Contribute to architectural and design decisions that balance short-term delivery with long-term sustainability. 

• Apply best practices in coding, security, performance, and technical debt management. 

Partnering with Product & Design 

• Collaborate with Product Managers and Designers to validate ideas, estimate effort, and assess feasibility. 

• Balance business needs with technical realities when implementing solutions. 

Delivery & Execution 

• Deliver high-quality software reliably and on time. 

• Support continuous deployment while following the team's release plan. 

• Help identify and mitigate technical and operational risks early. 

• Contribute to improving developer productivity through better tools, processes, and workflows. 

Innovation & Experimentation 

• Support rapid prototyping and technical validation before full implementation. 

• Collaborate with design to test and validate solutions. 

• Support A/B testing and iterative development. 

• Stay current with emerging technologies and suggest improvements. 

Backend & Data Engineering 

• Help stabilize a large legacy Java/Oracle application and support its gradual modularization over time. 

• Develop and maintain complex Oracle stored procedures implementing business workflows and business logic (250+ procedures). 

• Build and maintain Oracle triggers. 

• Work with large, complex database schemas (1000+ tables), including schema design and migrations. 

• Contribute to a large, complex Java codebase with an extensive set of dependencies. 

• Apply code generation techniques to streamline development. 

• Design and implement REST APIs. 

• Integrate with internal and external APIs. 

• Build file-processing capabilities (XML, CSV, Excel). 

• Implement asynchronous workers and background jobs. 

• Write and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. 

WHAT YOU BRING ALONG  

Architecture & System Design 

• Understanding of cloud-native, distributed systems (microservices, DDD, event-driven). 

• Familiarity with resiliency, scalability, and observability patterns. 

• Knowledge of API-first design, integration patterns, and data storage choices. 

Backend Engineering 

• Highly proficient in Java SE and modern Java coding principles. 

• Experience working on large, complex Java projects with extensive dependencies, using Maven (lifecycle and modules). 

• Experience with the Spring Framework (not Spring Boot) — e.g. Spring Core, MVC, and Context. 

• Builds REST APIs (OpenAPI) and event-driven services (Kafka, RabbitMQ, NATS). 

• Skilled in database modeling (SQL & NoSQL) and caching strategies. 

• Strong hands-on experience with Oracle: stored procedures, triggers, and complex schemas (1000+ tables), including migrations. 

• Proficient with Hibernate and Liquibase. 

• Experience with code generation tooling. 

• Experience with file processing (XML, CSV, Excel) and API integrations. 

• Experience building asynchronous workers and background jobs. 

• Experienced in profiling, debugging, and performance optimization. 

Security & Quality 

• Applies OWASP, secure coding, and threat-mitigation practices. 

• Implements OAuth2, JWT, OpenID Connect, and SSO. 

• Strong in TDD, unit/integration/E2E testing, code reviews, and static analysis. 

Cloud, DevOps & Automation 

• Hands-on with AWS/Azure/GCP, cloud networking, and IAM. 

• Strong with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code. 

• Experienced with monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, ELK/EFK, OpenTelemetry). 

Product & Collaboration 

• Translates business requirements into technical implementation details. 

• Works closely with Product and Design on feasibility and solution validation. 

• Uses metrics, logs, and data to guide decisions and reduce risk.
