The AVP, Controller – Investments is responsible for leading certain aspects of financial accounting, internal controls, budgeting, and financial reporting for the Company’s investment portfolio. Leads projects to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the finance function in an increasingly complex environment. This role works in close collaboration across several areas of the business and works with the wider Finance Team to add value across relevant teams. May be required to help prepare budgets and other financial plans for management information, corporate entities, third parties in conjunction with the company’s Financial Planning and Analysis activities. The AVP, Controller - Investments leads strategic planning for the functional area and will has oversight of and provides support for strategic projects for the global finance team. Additionally, this role has management responsibilities and provides development opportunities for team members.

Principal Accountabilities:
Technical Accounting and Financial Reporting

  • Lead the preparation of accurate financial reporting, both for internal and external purposes following required GAAP and regulatory standards, including providing support for more technical areas.

  • Complete aspects of the monthly close, including financial reporting, in compliance with US, or other relevant GAAP, or other regulatory requirements.

  • Review detailed analysis and monthly/quarterly reconciliations, including reconciliation to the general ledger.

  • Work with relevant partners to ensure accuracy of transactions and financial disclosure.

  • Lead the continued enhancement and ongoing development of multiple financial systems ensuring that all Finance needs are met.

  • Communicate with our auditors.

  • Lead the preparation of technical accounting memos observing US GAAP, including more technically challenging accounting memos.

  • Ensure appropriate SOX 404 processes exist and are followed for preparation and submission of financial data.

Strategic Projects

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and enhancement at a global level and propose and implement solutions to improve the efficiency of the functional area.

  • Lead global projects and essential projects workstreams specific to large global projects.

  • Participate in miscellaneous project work and provide general assistance to the Finance Department and other areas.

  • Provide ad-hoc support to the CAO, Global Corporate Controller, and business lead.

Team Oversight

  • Manage a team of professionals and provide appropriate guidance and career development.

Expected Competencies:

  • A university degree is required preferably with an emphasis on business, finance, and accounting; an advanced degree is advantageous.

  • A professional accounting designation (e.g. CA, ACA, CPA).

  • At least 5 to 7 years prior relevant industry experience (including Big Four audit experience), with at least 4 years in investment accounting.

  • Proactively shares relevant industry/business knowledge and information across the company

  • Partners effectively with individuals within and outside immediate work team to accomplish objectives.

  • Encourages and models cross-business unit or business unit/functional collaboration and knowledge-sharing across work teams.

  • Develops, in advance, innovative solutions to capitalize on opportunities and solve problems.

  • Sets high standards for self and others, and motivates, influences and engages others to deliver objectives and achieve results without relying upon direct authority.

  • Managing a team, recruits and selects the right people for the right jobs; provides ongoing, quality feedback to foster skill development and inspire high performance; and addresses performance issues in a direct, timely and respectful way.

  • Prioritizes external and internal client/stakeholder needs and ensures resources, activities and behaviors are focused on achieving satisfaction and providing value.

  • Applies knowledge globally.

  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, in particular the following standards: ASC 320, ASC 810, ASC 815 and ASC 825.

  • Experience with public companies SEC reporting and SOX 404 is required.

  • Proficiency in the use of computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite, etc.)

  • Strong working knowledge of general ledger and other accounting sub-systems.

  • Strong background in business process reviews and analysis, finance systems and internal controls.
