The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a fixed-term one year Associate who can provide the administrative assistance in our fundraising and outreach efforts in Japan. The Tokyo Development Team serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach efforts in Japan and across Asia. The team is dedicated to defend the humanity’s most fundamental values and galvanize the community of supporters to make an impact on people’s lives.

This position is one-year fixed-term, part-time at 20 hours per week and requires availability to work occasional nights and weekend events. The successful candidate can work remotely or from the office but will be required to work from the Tokyo office occasionally. The Associate reports to the City Director based in Tokyo.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide administrative support to the Tokyo Development team, including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, recording and processing divisional finances, and making travel arrangements.
  2. Provide development and fundraising support including gift processing, prospect research, impact reporting, translation tasks, tracking and updating gift information, and implementing a timely donor acknowledgement and recognition.
  3. Maintain the Salesforce donor databases by updating records and information, processing gifts from all donors, generating financial reports, lists and queries, updating information, overseeing data entry for special events and ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of the data;
  4. Assist with prospect and donor cultivation and stewardship with Tokyo Committee members and other supporters by coordinating and writing correspondence, scheduling and preparing for meetings, and preparing donor/prospect research and meeting briefings;
  5. Provide logistical support for annual dinners, receptions, committee meetings, briefings, virtual events and other offline events by coordinating vendors, volunteers, timelines, invitations, RSVPs, event materials, venue details, event technology and other relevant tasks;
  6. Prepare, draft, edit, format and/or distribute correspondence, documents and other materials including web content for the Japan website and other relevant social media;
  7. Assist with the recruitment, coordination, and mentoring of interns and volunteers; and
  8. Carry out other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. A self-starter who can thrive in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment is highly desirable.
  2. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  3. Strong oral and written communication skills in English and Japanese are required.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences, including donors and business executives, are required.
  5. Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally are required.
  6. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is
  7. Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations are required.
  8. Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications, such as Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook, Adobe Creative Cloud applications, social media platforms, Salesforce, and other client databases are highly desirable.
  9. Experience with event planning, community management and/or philanthropy is
  10. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues is preferred.
  11. Familiarity with fundraising and philanthropy landscape in Japan and APAC is preferred.
  12.  Strong interest in human rights, social justice, international development, sustainability, ESG and impact investing is preferred.

Other: Applicants for this position must possess Japanese work authorization. Occasional night or weekend work may be required, with flexible working hours available during those weeks to accommodate.

Salary and Benefits: HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits including commuting allowance and public social and labor insurance in Japan. The annualized salary for this position will be JPY 5,000,000, prorated to JPY 2,500,000 to reflect a 50% schedule.
