About this role
Team and Function

We deliver risk management, tailored advice and quantitative analytics to ensure risks are well understood and appropriately managed to support stronger business and investment outcomes.
We apply quantitative analysis, market expertise and multidisciplinary skills to identify, assess and address real‑world risks across portfolios and the firm. We partner closely with investment teams and other businesses to challenge assumptions, inform decision‑making and help portfolio managers build risk‑aware portfolios. We also develop and enhance analytics for risk and portfolio management by leveraging Aladdin’s capabilities.
The Investment Risk function is known for:
- Being a team of outstanding risk managers and quants partnering with portfolio management teams to oversee our clients’ portfolios to ensure they are consistent with specified risk and performance objectives
- Providing real-world solutions that help preserve the financial well-being of all our clients
- Holding unbiased insights into financial markets and portfolios
- Providing critical independent thought leadership and risk oversight for senior management of the firm and the Board of Directors
Your Role and Impact
In this investment risk role, you will partner with BlackRock’s Private Financing Solutions (“PFS”) business unit, an integrated franchise with approximately $370 billion in client assets (including $205 billion of private credit assets). The primary investment perimeter of focus is the Growth and Venture Debt strategy that provides private debt solutions to sponsor-backed, high-growth companies across different stages of their development. You will work closely with investment professionals, senior risk managers, and partners across BlackRock on new transaction review, asset-level monitoring, asset-, portfolio- and fund-level analysis, cross-platform processes, product development and client engagement.
The role offers broad exposure across the investment lifecycle, from reviewing new financing proposals to monitoring portfolio companies’ performance, evaluating potential risk mitigation, as well as restructuring strategies. You will combine fundamental credit analysis, quantitative techniques, and investment risk insights to develop clear recommendations for investment professionals, senior leadership and, where appropriate, clients. The breadth of the role may appeal to candidates from banking and asset management, transaction advisory, and financial-services consulting backgrounds.
Responsibilities
- Act as a trusted risk partner to investment professionals across the Growth and Venture Debt strategy, providing independent assessment and constructive challenge throughout the investment lifecycle (including new financing and restructuring proposals).
- Work with senior risk managers and investment teams to promote rigorous governance and oversight, identifying emerging portfolio risks and ensuring portfolio exposures remain consistent with client objectives, investment guidelines and risk appetite.
- Monitor portfolio-company performance using fundamental analysis and investment risk analytics, regularly interacting with investment teams to understand evolving risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Conduct asset-, portfolio- and fund-level analysis, including quarterly portfolio reviews, thematic analysis, stress testing and scenario analysis, performance attribution, and assessment of portfolio construction, deployment and asset quality trends.
- Develop and enhance analytical frameworks, monitoring tools and risk reporting to assess individual investments, quantify the impact of potential risk events, and inform portfolio-construction decisions.
- Translate complex ideas into clear, actionable perspectives for investment professionals and senior leadership, including through regular business reviews and timely ad hoc analysis.
- Contribute independent risk perspectives to valuation and other cross-platform processes, including product development, investor due diligence, and client engagement on investment risk-related topics.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, mathematics, engineering or other analytical discipline; relevant postgraduate qualification(s) would be advantageous.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in credit risk management, credit research or portfolio management, with a focus on direct lending / private credit, principal finance, transaction advisory and/or financial services consulting.
- Exceptional analytical skills, attention to detail, a strong work ethic and an interest in applying a problem-solving mindset across the investment lifecycle.
- Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team and collaborate with team members across BlackRock’s global locations.
- In-depth understanding of investment risk management including modelling techniques and innovative approaches to solving risk-return, portfolio construction, and risk management problems.
- Outstanding interpersonal, leadership and oral/written communication skills; ability to communicate both quantitative and capital markets insights succinctly is a must.
- Familiarity with programming and data-query tools (Python, R or SQL) is required; relevant professional qualifications, such as FRM or CFA designation, are beneficial.
