Job Description 
CrossBoundary is recruiting a full-time Senior Associate or Associate Principal to join our Power & Infrastructure Advisory Team in London or Nairobi (secondary preferences of Dubai or Mumbai).The Senior Associate or Associate Principal will be primarily responsible for leading end-to-end transaction advisory mandates across project finance, M&A and equity raises for buy-side and sell-side clients deals. This will also be complemented by some origination and strategic advisory mandates. Lastly they will also support the team’s strategic initiatives, sector analysis, and work alongside the P&I leadership team to provide oversight and mentorship to our cohort of analysts and associates. As a member of the team, you will actively contribute to a strategically important and growing sector practice area with a global mandate that has the potential for significant positive impact on investment into developing markets.

What you will do 
Your primary responsibilities would be:
  • Lead and manage team of investment professionals on the execution of strategic and transaction advisory engagements in the infrastructure sector across project finance, M&A and equity raises for buy-side and sell-side clients deals
  • Provide project leadership and execution oversight to a wide range of infrastructure advisory mandates:
    • Transaction advisory: Support early and late-stage infrastructure projects across the deal life cycle to reach financial close. This could include:
      • Country / sector landscape / analysis as part of a market entry or CDD exercise
      • Originating / sourcing deals
      • Conducting commercial due diligence on the assets / portfolio of assets
      • Reviewing commercial / contractual agreements that impact the transaction (PPA, offtake agreement, O&M agreements, etc.)
      • Developing / refining / reviewing sophisticated financial models
      • Developing valuation models 
      • Identifying project risks and mitigants
      • Developing IC memos for clients
    • PPP advisory: Supporting governments and public sector clients on structuring, procurement, and execution of PPP transactions across power and infrastructure assets:
      • PPP feasibility studies, value-for-money (VfM) analysis, and optimal risk allocation between public and private parties
      • Structuring and negotiating concession agreements, PPP agreements, and related transaction documents between public authorities, private sponsors, and lenders
      • Engaging with DFIs, multilateral agencies, and other public-sector stakeholders to secure financing / guarantees for PPP transactions
      • Advising on the regulatory, institutional, and policy frameworks needed to bring bankable PPP programs to market
    • Strategic advisory: Lead clean power strategic advisory engagements for public and private sector stakeholders (e.g. roadmaps, stakeholder engagements, and capital maps)
  • Supporting the P&I leadership team in developing new revenue lines and framing new business pursuits, hiring, capacity building, performance management, and general team leadership activities
  • Representing CrossBoundary’s power and infrastructure team in seminars and conferences with the overall objective of relationship-building and business development
  • This role is client facing, and extensive travel is expected for this role
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in economics, finance or engineering or a related technical field. MBA or other equivalent higher education preferred but not required.
  • Deep infrastructure financing experience represented through 5-7 years of experience at one of the following: 
    • the project finance or M&A team of top-tier investment or commercial bank or DFI or specialist advisor with proven success; or
    • an asset manager investing in power or infrastructure; or
    • the corporate finance team of an infrastructure project developer with a sizable project portfolio 
  • Experience in fundraising (equity or debt), investing, and/or developing in infrastructure projects
  • Deep understanding of bankability considerations for infrastructure projects and strong financial modeling and valuation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to project manage complex transactions and strategic advisory engagements
  • Excellent client management skills and experience managing and overseeing analysis / associates
  • Demonstrated attention to detail while maintaining a holistic picture of overall goals
  • Excellent analytical ability and discipline, ability to think clearly and communicate effectively, solve problems, and a voracious hunger to learn in complex situations
  • Ability to work with colleagues from a diverse range of backgrounds
  • Experience in working with both public and private sector stakeholders is beneficial but not necessary

Skills Required

  • 10+ years of experience in project finance at a top-tier investment or commercial bank, development finance institution, specialist advisor, energy or infrastructure asset manager, or clean energy project developer
  • Leadership experience raising equity or debt for infrastructure projects
  • Experience working in underserved or frontier markets
  • Knowledge of power procurement and power auction processes
  • Experience working with development finance institutions such as IFC, AfDB, DFC, FMO, or AFD
  • Experience working with development agencies such as USAID, UKAID, or JICA
  • Ability to project-manage complex transactions, strategic advisory engagements, and team members
  • Experience working with governmental clients and stakeholders
  • Strong analytical, communication, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • Experience with transmission or distribution projects, or intermittent-generation projects with storage capacity
  • At least one renewable energy project developed from origination to financial close in Africa
  • Experience in clean power strategic advisory engagements for public and private sector stakeholders
  • English working proficiency
  • Spanish or French proficiency
