Presbyterian Homes & Services is seeking an Associate General Counsel to join its team at the Home Office in Roseville, MN.


The Associate General Counsel provides legal counsel and representation to PHS and its affiliates at the direction of the General Counsel. The position supports a broad in-house legal practice with particular emphasis on labor and employment matters, as well as support for other aspects of risk management, including advice, counsel, and dispute resolution.


The Associate General Counsel reports to the General Counsel and collaborates cross-functionally, while exercising independent legal judgment within assigned matters and delegated authority, while maintaining alignment with the General Counsel and internal clients, escalating significant, sensitive, strategic, high-risk, precedent-setting, or enterprise-level matters for final determination as appropriate.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide legal advice and representation at the direction of the General Counsel in labor and employment matters, as well as other litigation and dispute resolution, including general and professional liability, commercial, construction, collections, and regulatory matters.
  • At the direction of the General Counsel, collaborate and partner closely with Human Resources leadership on all areas of employment and labor matters, including advice, investigations, compliance, policies, claims, and charges.
  • Provide advice and support on resident relations matters, including resident care matters, resident conduct, claims, and housing matters.
  • Advise on regulatory and compliance matters, including monitoring developments, licensure, credentialing, policies, investigations, and contested matters.
  • Support risk management by identifying, assessing, escalating, and mitigating legal, regulatory, operational, and reputational risk, including insurance, risk assessments, policies, and training, with particular emphasis on enterprise risk on sensitive topics, including fidelity to mission and vision.
  • Support the other general in-house legal needs of the organization in coordination with the General Counsel.
  • Maintain ownership of assigned legal matters from intake through resolution, including assessment, prioritization, documentation, stakeholder communication, follow-up, and timely escalation to the General Counsel.
  • Serve as a trusted legal partner to leaders by providing practical, risk-informed counsel, clearly articulated options, and timely recommendations that support informed decision-making and alignment with PHS's mission, values, and risk tolerance.
  • Advise senior leaders on the legal, regulatory, strategic, and risk implications of significant organizational matters, initiatives, and decisions.
  • Participate in the selection, engagement, direction, and oversight of outside counsel, including managing scope, strategy, performance, budgets, and fees in coordination with the General Counsel.
  • Participate in and lead initiatives to advance the organization's legal function through effective adoption of best practices and technology solutions.
  • Participate in and contribute to Legal Department meetings, initiatives, processes, and priorities, including cross-functional projects, as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor required.
  • Must be licensed and admitted to practice law in Minnesota, or eligible for prompt admission or applicable registration in Minnesota.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant legal experience required, with general in-house, healthcare, senior living, nonprofit, or similarly regulated industry experience preferred.
  • Relevant experience should include several of the following: employment and labor matters; litigation, dispute resolution, claims handling, insurance, and risk management; regulatory and compliance matters, including advice, policies, investigations, and proceedings; selection, direction, oversight, and cost-effective management of outside counsel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, legal research, document management, and related legal technology.
  • Ability to prioritize matters, exercise sound judgment, and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, negotiation, research, writing, drafting, issue-spotting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate professionally, maintain confidentiality and privilege, build stakeholder trust, and provide practical, service-oriented legal counsel.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language to communicate with all customers.
  • Demonstrated compatibility with PHS's mission and operating philosophies.
Pay RangeThe estimated starting pay range for this role is $136,000 $165,000 yearly. This good faith estimate is based upon PHS’s typical starting pay range for this role. Actual pay range depends upon many factors including each individual employee’s qualifications and market conditions and is subject to change. Benefits

Full-time benefits-eligible employment begins at a minimum of 30 hours per week:
