Overview

The Associate General Counsel (AGC) plays a critical role in partnering with the Deputy General Counsel and business leaders to support the company’s business objectives and ensure the company’s legal, compliance, and risk-management functions operate smoothly, efficiently, and reliably. This is an execution-focused, operationally oriented role for an experienced lawyer who takes pride in enabling progress while exercising sound judgment. The ideal candidate understands that strong legal departments are most effective when their work is pragmatic and business-oriented. The AGC will handle a wide range of legal matters across the business and, over time, will take primary ownership of one or more substantive areas based on business needs and individual strengths. This role is designed for a lawyer who values autonomy, increasing ownership, and professional satisfaction through scope and responsibility, rather than formal hierarchy or title progression.

In this role, success means:
•    Business partners rely on you directly for practical, consistent legal guidance
•    Matters move forward efficiently with appropriate risk management
•    You exercise independent judgment within scope and escalate when needed
•    Over time, you become the clear owner of specific legal areas

Your Impact

Key Responsibilities

This is a generalist position. You will be expected to handle a broad range of legal matters in a variety of areas, which may be adjusted to align with your individual strengths, experience and preferences. The AGC position could be a strong fit for someone coming from a more specialized practice who wants to broaden into a business-facing, in-house role. Some representative areas include:

•    Employment-related issues
•    Compliance and policy questions
•    Disputes with customers, vendors, or other third parties
•    Corporate and governance support
•    Other general in-house legal matters as needed

In addition, you will:
•    Serve as a practical, business-oriented legal advisor who enables progress while managing risk
•    Take increasing ownership of specific subject areas over time
•    Make decisions confidently within scope and escalate cross-domain or enterprise issues appropriately
•    Support public company obligations as needed

Our ideal candidate will have the following skills and competencies:
•    Prior experience handling matters independently, not solely in a supporting role
•    Strong legal judgment with a track record of independently assessing risk and making sound, defensible recommendations
•    Interest in growth through increased scope and ownership
•    Composure, sound judgment, and a solutions driven mindset
•    Pride in being the steady, reliable legal voice behind successful outcomes
•    Collegiality and genuine commitment to enabling others’ success and motivated by building systems that work

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in Viriginia or eligible to practice as in-house counsel in Virginia
  • 5-8+ years of relevant legal experience, including experience managing matters independently
  • Demonstrated ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice across a range of subject areas
  • Experience advising internal business partners and navigating competing priorities effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously

Preferred Experience:

  • Familiarity with employment law, compliance, corporate governance, or general commercial matters
  • Prior in-house legal experience
  • Experience supporting a public company
