About Clear Street:
Clear Street is modernizing the brokerage ecosystem. Founded in 2018, Clear Street is a diversified financial services firm replacing the legacy infrastructure used across capital markets.
We started from scratch by building a completely cloud-native clearing and custody system designed for today’s complex, global market. Clear Street’s proprietary prime brokerage platform adds significant efficiency to the market, while focusing on minimizing risk, redundancy, and cost for clients. Our goal is to create a single source-of-truth platform for every asset class, in every country, and in any currency.
By combining highly-skilled product and engineering talent with seasoned finance professionals, we’re building the essentials to compete in today’s fast-paced markets.
About the Role:
Clear Street is looking for an Associate Director of Tax Reporting & Compliance to join our Tax team. Reporting to the Head of Tax, you'll own U.S. federal tax reporting and compliance for our consolidated group, working closely with the international and state and local tax leads. This is a high-visibility role with real ownership — you'll be a key contributor in building a scalable, best-in-class tax function as the firm grows across businesses and geographies.
Responsibilities:
Tax Provision & Financial Reporting
- Prepare quarterly and annual US federal income tax provision calculations (ASC 740) for the consolidated group, including domestic and foreign entities
- Reconcile tax accounts — deferred tax assets/liabilities, uncertain tax positions (FIN 48), and income taxes payable
- Prepare and review income tax disclosures and supporting schedules for audited financial statements
- Prepare effective tax rate (ETR) analysis and rate reconciliations for management reporting
- Partner with external auditors during the audit and review process, managing information requests and resolving open items
- Assist in designing, implementing, and maintaining internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) related to the tax function, with an eye toward SOX readiness as the Company scales
- Help build the processes, documentation standards, and control environment required to support public company reporting
Federal Tax Compliance
- Own day-to-day management of the outsourced federal compliance function, including review and filing of U.S. federal income tax returns and oversight of third-party service providers
- Manage the federal tax calendar, respond to IRS notices, and support federal examinations and controversy
- Manage and coordinate R&D tax credit studies, including coordination with external advisors and internal stakeholders
- Support information reporting obligations, where applicable, including 1099, 1042, FATCA/CRS, and FBAR filings
International Tax
- Work closely with the international tax team on U.S. international tax computations — GILTI, FDII, FTC, Subpart F, and withholding taxes — and their impact on the federal return and provision
- Support cross-border tax planning and structuring initiatives supporting the Head of Tax
- Assist with Transfer Pricing, E&P studies and other international tax projects as needed
Tax Research & Legislative Monitoring
- Monitor U.S. federal and international tax developments; interpret proposed legislation, Treasury regulations, and IRS guidance
- Model and present the financial reporting and compliance impact of tax law changes to the Head of Tax and senior stakeholders
Process Improvement & Technology
- Identify and implement automation and process improvements across federal tax reporting and compliance
- Lead or contribute to tax technology initiatives (e.g., provision software, ERP integration) to strengthen efficiency and controls
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Partner across Accounting, Legal, Treasury, Operations, and Engineering/IT on tax-related matters
- Support special projects as directed by the Head of Tax (e.g., global structuring, tax modeling)
Qualifications
Required
- 7+ years of tax experience with a strong emphasis on US federal income tax compliance and ASC 740 reporting;
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- Experience preparing tax provisions and financial statement disclosures for public companies
- Deep knowledge of US federal income tax, ASC 740, and uncertain tax positions (FIN 48)
- Experience managing outsourced compliance functions and third-party service providers
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with ERP systems and tax provision/compliance software (e.g., OneSource)
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communicator; comfortable working independently and collaborating across functions and geographies
Preferred
- Combination of big 4 and in-house financial services experience
- Experience with corporate tax as well as partnership tax strongly preferred
- Exposure to prime brokerage, broker-dealer, or financial services businesses is a strong plus
- Previous experience implementing tax provision software
- Familiarity with US international tax concepts (GILTI, FDII, FTC, Subpart F, withholding) and transfer pricing
- Experience with FBAR and FATCA/CRS reporting obligations
