Job Description

The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an opening for an Assistant Supervisor in the Grand Jury Stenographers Unit. Under direction, with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, the Assistant Supervisor will work closely with the Chief of Stenographic Services to supervise the work of Reporters/Stenographers and Transcribers performing a variety of stenographic and verbatim reporting tasks. This vacancy is also available to present incumbents permanently serving in the civil service title of "Reporter/Stenographer" (10212).
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Assist Chief of Stenographic Services in reviewing, assigning and ensuring adequate daily staffing and scheduling of all Reporters/Stenographers.
Coordinate with Assistant District Attorneys on transcript requests and/or if request is still relevant or necessary.
Assign and log CD and video transcription requests.
Assist with and coordinate interview, hiring and training process for new staff.
Review and ensure timely submission of monthly bills and invoices.
Take verbatim statements of witnesses, complainants and defendants.
Take verbatim testimony introduced before a grand jury; transcribes this material for use in court proceedings.
Appear in court, as necessary, to testify as to accuracy of statements or testimony and of circumstances surrounding interrogations.
Maintain records and files of proceedings and stenographic notes to locate testimony and other records pertaining to specific cases.
Prepare, review and provide reports and tracking information as requested.
Perform other administrative and supervisory duties as necessary.
In addition to the Minimum Qualification Requirements, candidates must possess the following:
Associate Occupational Science Degree in Court Reporting required.
Preferred Requirements/Skills:
Other formal or informal supervisory or project management experience and/or training in a related setting.
This vacancy is also available to incumbents permanently serving in the civil service title of Reporter/Stenographer (10212).
Two years of full-time paid experience as a Reporter/Stenographer or similar position.
Ability to take verbatim statements and transcriptions at a minimum rate of 175 words per minute.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required.
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, prioritize among competing needs and respond quickly to requests for information.
Ability to interact with all levels of staff, with a high regard for confidentiality and diplomacy.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workflow.
Strong attention to detail and high concern for data accuracy.
Ability to work and supervise others efficiently to meet deadlines.
Must be a self-starter and possess the ability to work independently.
Dependable team player who works collaboratively and cooperatively with staff in a team-oriented environment.
Resourcefulness, initiative and good judgment are essential.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel.

Current office employees: To be eligible for a transfer or promotion, staff must have already served at least one (1) year in their current unit/bureau/department and be in good standing. In addition, must meet the minimum and additional qualifications of the position.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
