As an Assistant Starter, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and safe start of every race. Working directly with the Starter, you will be responsible for the careful handling and loading of horses into the starting gates, prioritizing the safety of both the animals and their jockeys. This position requires a strong understanding of horse behavior, quick reflexes, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Responsibilities
  • Aid the Starter in safely and efficiently loading and holding horses in and around the starting gates.
  • Ensure the safety of both horses and jockeys at all times during the starting process.
  • Work effectively as a part of the starting gate team. 
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and 1 year of related experience (e.g., horse handling, equine industry).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an OHRC gaming and racing license.
  • Strong aptitude for working with horses.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Quick reflexes and the ability to react calmly in high-pressure situations.
  • Requires frequent standing and walking. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Involves considerable exposure to smoke, extreme temperatures, dirt, chemicals, dust, and fumes, typical of a racetrack environment.
