Assistant Professor

The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Memphis invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in Fall 2027, pending final budgetary approval. The University of Memphis is an R1 institution. The College of Arts and Sciences offers competitive faculty workloads that recognize demonstrated research productivity while balancing research, teaching, and service responsibilities in accordance with College workload policy. The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice is a research-intensive department whose faculty are actively engaged in scholarship, teaching, and service, with particular emphasis on academic-practitioner partnerships and community-engaged research.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research and scholarship, contribute to the Department's undergraduate and graduate teaching missions, mentor students, and participate in service activities appropriate to a tenure-track faculty appointment. Consistent with the Department's commitment to engaged scholarship, the successful candidate should demonstrate an interest in developing collaborative research and other partnerships with criminal justice agencies, governmental organizations, nonprofit organizations, and other community partners. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching expertise includes juvenile delinquency and/or gang violence. Candidates with methodological expertise related to crime analysis, particularly social network analysis, are especially encouraged to apply.

Must hold a Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field by the start date of the appointment. ABD candidates will be considered provided that all requirements for the doctoral degree are completed prior to the beginning of the Fall 2027 appointment:

• Demonstrate evidence of, or strong potential for, an active and productive research agenda;

• Demonstrate evidence of, or potential for, effective undergraduate and graduate teaching; and

• Demonstrate the ability to contribute to the research, teaching, and service missions of the Department and University.

   

Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate one or more of the following:

• Research and/or teaching expertise in juvenile delinquency, gang violence, or closely related areas;

• Methodological expertise in crime analysis, particularly social network analysis;

• Experience conducting community-engaged or applied research;

• Experience collaborating with criminal justice agencies, governmental organizations, nonprofit organizations, or other community partners;

• Evidence of scholarly productivity appropriate to career stage; and

• Potential to pursue external research funding and collaborative research opportunities.
