Location:
New York, NYThe Assistant Editor works with the Articles Editor on the Talk of the Town and Shouts & Murmurs sections of the magazine, and on other pieces online and in print. Candidates should possess a demonstrated sense of humor, a creative eye, and excellent researching, writing, and editing skills. This is a Guild position.
Responsibilities
Conduct research and work with editors to conceive, plan for, and revise stories for both print and web.
Pitch ideas for the Talk section, and use creative judgment to help assign pieces to appropriate writers.
Read drafts and comment on reporting, structure, and tone.
Act as a liaison with fact checkers, art editors, and copy editors, and work with writers to review and administer changes.
Coordinate with writers and editors about assignments, expenses, and travel plans.
Work with display editors to write heds, deks, and captions for print and digital stories.
Manage weekly schedule of upcoming Talk articles, due dates, pegs, and writers.
Work with the art department on illustrations for articles.
Add links to Talk and Shouts articles.
Handle various administrative tasks, including reading mail, taking phone calls, addressing tech needs, booking travel, and processing the Articles Editor’s expenses.
Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.
Skills and Qualifications
Some editorial experience (editing or writing) at a print magazine or website preferred.
Strong creative and organizational skills with an ability to work in a very fast-paced environment.
Ambitious, proactive, and a quick learner.
Very strong communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
Ability to work independently, anticipate needs, and jump in when a team effort is needed.
Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $67,500-$72,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
