Job DescriptionThe Assistant Driller serves as a vital member of the drilling crew, directly supporting the Driller in supervising onsite personnel and managing all drilling floor activities. The primary focus of this role is to ensure that drilling programs are executed safely and efficiently while maintaining the integrity of all drilling equipment. The Assistant Driller is responsible for the safe operation and routine maintenance of technical interests on watch, ensuring strict compliance with environmental, health, and security standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Crew Supervision
Support the Driller in the direct supervision of the rig crew and management of all drilling floor activities.
Directly oversee borehole drilling operations, including flushing and well completion tasks.
Perform and supervise the making and breaking of pipe connections during operations.
Execute pump testing and monitor well integrity throughout the drilling process.
Conduct geophysical surveys and assist with data acquisition and interpretation as required.
Safety & Compliance
Strictly enforce all safety protocols and industry standards, such as Shell's "Goal Zero" and regular toolbox meetings.
Monitor health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards onsite to ensure full regulatory compliance.
Initiate emergency response actions when necessary to protect personnel and equipment.
Maintain accurate records of all operations and report daily activities to the Driller or Operational Manager.
Equipment Maintenance
Ensure all drilling equipment and machinery are regularly maintained to prevent operational downtime.
Take responsibility for the safe operation and routine maintenance of technical systems while on watch duty.
Verify that all mechanical and fluid handling equipment is in optimal working condition.
Education & Experience
Education: A Bachelor of Science in Geoscience, Petroleum Geology, or a related Engineering field is highly preferred.
Experience: Previous experience as a Geoscientist or in a similar rig floor role is required.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in geophysical survey methods, borehole drilling, and well monitoring.
Professional Certifications
HSE: Certification in HSE Levels 1, 2, and 3 is mandatory.
Offshore/Maritime: BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) certification is required for offshore assignments.
Skills & Attributes
Proven ability to work effectively in deadline-driven, high-pressure team environments.
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills applied to work safety practices.
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills for reporting and team coordination.
Physical fitness and the ability to work in demanding rig environments.
Monthly Rate (Consolidated): Approximately $3,147 USD (including overtime and leave compensation for worldwide waters).
Hourly Rate (Project-Based): Standard project rates are approximately $8.30 USD per hour.
