Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE

The Assistant Director of Operations is responsible for the overall management of operations at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC).  This position monitors staffing and equipment expenses to meet the financial goals of the HBNHC budget.  This position will plan, manage, and execute appropriate coverages for scheduled facility activities.  Responsibilities include overseeing ice-related equipment and field of play maintenance, coordinating custodial services and ensuring on-time facility operations.  This position may provide coverage for nights and weekends based on event schedules.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS

This position will develop, train, and implement standard operating procedures for the ice surfaces and related fields of play at the HBNHC.  Responsibilities include ice maintenance, ice making/painting, and equipment maintenance/operation. The position is responsible for maintaining the field of play commensurate with NCAA Division I ice hockey standards, to include inspections of dasherboard system, spectator netting and other related equipment. Responsibilities include planning and executing annual ice installation, coordinating ongoing ice maintenance, and overseeing preventative maintenance schedules for related equipment. This position is responsible for establishing and maintaining standard operating procedures for all full-time and part-time ice resurfacer operators within the HBNHC. This position is responsible for implementing and executing the indoor air quality regulations and standards for enclosed arenas per Minnesota Department of Health.

The Assistant Director of Operations is responsible for coordinating and managing the overall operations and facility maintenance of the HBNHC. This position will submit work orders and liaise with skilled facility trades for any major repairs and maintenance for the HBNHC, including exterior grounds. Responsible for communicating with the Director of the HBNHC on work order status from initial planning phases to final completion. Collaborate with full-time and student staff to uphold high-level customer service standards providing a clean, safe, and friendly environment for all user groups.  Additional duties include opening and closing the facility, safeguarding and managing interior spaces, and liaising with General Maintenance Workers for custodial and minor maintenance duties within the facility

The Assistant Director of Operations is responsible for overseeing, implementing, and executing student staff training for all operational positions within the HBNHC.  This position will supervise the full-time Ice Makers(s) and part-time student staff within the HBNHC. Responsibilities include coordinating and communicating staff coverage for facility programming, event schedules, and operational priorities. The Assistant Director of Operations will be responsible for working with the Assistant Director to onboard, train, supervise, evaluate, schedule, and offboard part-time student staff.  This position will be responsible for recommending promotional opportunities for part-time student staff.

The Assistant Director of Operations will develop, implement, and maintain accurate logbook records for preventative maintenance programs, ice resurfaces, ice maintenance, and equipment within the field of play. This position will be responsible for ensuring accurate measurement and recording of Indoor Air Quality within the HBNHC and submitting completed quarterly logbooks to the Director. The Assistant Director of Operations will manage, record, and submit Field of Play (FoP) Reports for all SCSU ice hockey competitions. This position will assist the Director with short-term operational planning and long-range capital improvements. The Assistant Director of Operations will plan and recommend equipment and operational purchases within the HBNHC.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2-years of professional experience managing an ice arena

-an Associates can substitute for 6 months experience, BA/BS can substitute for 1 year experience, Master's can substitute for 1.5 years of experience

  • 1-year providing work direction and scheduling staff

  • Outstanding communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Basic computer proficiency (Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, etc.)

  • Critical thinking and organizational skills

Preferred Qualification 

  • Must have a valid Driver’s License for operating a motor vehicle

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

  • Certified Ice Technician designation

  • First Aid and CPR certification

Other Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Ability to work in cold environment for long periods of time
