The Role

The Assistant Band Director assists in the leadership, administration, instruction, and development of the University's band program. This position supports all aspects of band operations, including rehearsals, performances, recruitment, student development, event coordination, and administrative functions. The Assistant Band Director works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to promote musical excellence, student success, and community engagement while supporting the mission and values of the University.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist with conducting rehearsals and performances for university band ensembles. 
  • Provide instruction in music performance, musicianship, marching techniques, and ensemble development. 
  • Teach and mentor student musicians in individual and group settings. 
  • Assist with sectionals, clinics, workshops, and leadership development programs. 
  • Evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback to support musical growth. 
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and administering all aspects of the band program. 
  • Assist with music library management, inventory control, and equipment maintenance.
  • Support budget administration and purchasing activities. 
  • Maintain records related to band membership, attendance, performances, and equipment.
  • Participate in recruitment events, auditions, campus visits, and outreach activities.
  • Develop relationships with high school band directors, music educators, and community organizations. 
  • Support initiatives that enhance student retention and engagement within the band program. 
  • Assist with planning and execution of concerts, athletic events, ceremonies, parades, festivals, and special performances. 
  • Coordinate travel arrangements and logistics for band events and tours. 
  • Ensure proper preparation of facilities, equipment, uniforms, and instruments. 
  • Participate in university events, commencement ceremonies, convocations, and special programs. 
  • Support outreach initiatives that promote the band program and the University's mission. 
  • Foster positive relationships with students, alumni, donors, and community stakeholders.
  • Assist with fundraising and development activities supporting the band program. 
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures. 
  • Promote a safe and inclusive learning environment. 
  • Support risk management practices related to travel, equipment, and performances.
  • Maintain appropriate care and security of university-owned instruments and resources. 


Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Education, Conducting, or a related field. 
  • Demonstrated experience in band performance, conducting, or music instruction. 
  • Strong knowledge of instrumental music techniques and ensemble performance. 
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds and in all inclement weather conditions including; rain, sleet or snow.
  • Must be able to work nights and/or weekends.
