Job Description:

The Assistant Dean serves as an integral member of the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards, supporting the Senior Associate Dean and Director of Student Conduct & Community Standards and contributing to the overall direction and priorities of the office. The Assistant Dean provides services and works closely with Brown University undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. The position serves as a Case Administrator for student conduct cases and as a dean’s hearing officer. The Assistant Dean works with students and others to investigate violations of the Brown University Code of Student Conduct and related policies. The Assistant Dean promotes equity and social justice practices with a focus on education and restorative justice.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree.

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in student conduct, student affairs, residential life, or law or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience managing crises effectively and collaboratively while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism is preferred.

Job Competencies

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated ability to create, manage, and communicate complicated processes required.

  • Ability to present and speak before student audiences.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to use technology in the delivery of services and case management including conduct software, student conduct hearing audio, video, and online devices.

  • Ability to communicate information effectively to students and parents in heightened emotional states of distress or anger.

  • Demonstrated commitment and success working in a multicultural environment with a critical understanding of social justice issues in both student and workplace settings required. Skills, knowledge, and experience specifically focused on the needs of students of color, students from indigenous communities, LGBTQ students, international students, students from diverse faith communities, students with disabilities, undocumented students, and/or first-generation college students is preferred.

  • Ability to problem solve and to make difficult and timely decisions utilizing sound judgment, assuming ownership of the problem and resolving it in a collaborative manner.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, and families to advise and support undergraduate, graduate, and medical students through difficult and complicated situations.

  • Flexibility to evolve with a dynamic student affairs environment.

  • Strong commitment to supporting the University's goal of cultivating a diverse and inclusive community.
