The Opportunity

MLT is expanding our internal staff in response to the long-term success of our outcomes and the unprecedented growth of our programs and services and seeks an Assistant Controller to support the Controller to manage MLT's day-to-day accounting operations. The assistant controller will provide leadership of approximately 10 operational staff.

Financial Operations and Compliance

  • Ensure financial activity is captured in the general ledger and is in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles through the adherence to MLT’s policies and procedures.
  • Work with the Controller to establish and maintain adequate internal controls over financial reporting and improve efficiencies in the department.
  • Oversee/manage the month end close process to ensure accurate, including monthly budget to actual and month-to-month variance analysis.
  • Partner with the Controller to complete MLT financial statement audits and tax filings in accordance with issuance deadlines. Provide guidance on and propose solutions for the presentation of unique operating activities.
  • Assist in the compilation of board reporting packages which include, but are not limited to, financial statements, analytics, and variance analysis.
  • Identify and implement process changes and technological solutions to improve operational efficiency and enhance reporting capabilities.
  • Assist the CFO, Controller, and senior leadership with special projects.

Team Strategy and Management

  • Utilize workforce planning to evaluate current capacity to support operational and hiring decisions.
  • Manage and coach Finance Operations teammates through guidance on supervisory responsibilities, mid-year and year end evaluations, and employee relation situations as they arise.
  • Oversee the recruitment, selection and orientation for incoming Finance Operational staff.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance and/or nonprofit administration
  • Six or more years of relevant professional experience in nonprofit organizations, including oversight of annual audit and preparation of federal form 990 and supporting schedules 
  • Experience managing accounting records for federal grants/contracts and familiarity with federal procurement guidelines and regulations such as OMB Circulars
  • Proficiency with accounting software (Microsoft Dynamics GP/SSRS/Management Reporter preferred) and Excel spreadsheets 
  • Experience managing staff who are responsible for full-cycle GL, AP, AR and payroll processes Strong attention to detail and accuracy 
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to manage and meet deadlines for multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including the ability to communicate complex financial matters to non-financial personnel 
  • Ability to work within multi-functional teams 

Other Highly Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance and/or nonprofit administration
  • Professional certification (CPA)
  • Experience in philanthropic or consulting environments
