Reuters wants an experienced journalist with impeccable news judgment to manage the daily, breaking news file in Asia across all formats — text, video and pictures — in a region stretching from Australasia and Southeast Asia to the big economies of North Asia.  

The Breaking & Daily News Editor will oversee our response to breaking news events, from first snaps, pictures and live video coverage to fast, additional content such as personal stories and explainers. They are also responsible for daily news coverage, from set-piece events like elections and summits to viral-worthy, slice-of-life stories. 

This role is central to setting editorial priorities for the day and ensuring timely, accurate, and high-impact coverage that meets the needs of Reuters’ global clients.  

As Breaking News & Daily Editor, you will oversee integrated text-visuals breaking news hubs stretching from Sydney to Beijing, operating across borders, working in more than eight languages. The region’s breaking and daily news operations also include local-language text services in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. 

Ability to speak or read Mandarin would be an advantage. 

You will have a deep knowledge of the region and prioritise stories that matter most to clients, with a sharp focus on speed and accuracy. You will have experience in dealing with staff safety in hostile environments and have a strong track record in people management, including hiring and developing talent.  

You will be expected to make quick editorial decisions under pressure and to understand the needs of our three main client groups: the London Stock Exchange Group’s global network, which includes the local-language services; agency media, which includes the world's top broadcasters, newspapers and digital outlets; and Reuters’ own digital readers on the app, reuters.com and social media accounts.  

The role will be based in Singapore and report to the East Asia  & Pacific Editor.

  • Set editorial priorities for breaking and daily news across all formats, in conjunction with regional editor and bureau chiefs. 

  • Lead and coordinate a cross-format team to deliver fast, accurate, and impactful coverage. 

  • Ensure stories meet Reuters’ standards and client expectations across platforms. 

  • Make rapid editorial decisions under time pressure 

  • Collaborate with regional and global editors to shape coverage and strategy.  

  • Mentor and coach staff, fostering a high-performance and inclusive newsroom culture. 

  • Drive innovation and experimentation in breaking news coverage 

About You

To be our Asia Breaking & Daily News Editor, you will have:

  • Proven experience in breaking news journalism, ideally in a global news organisation. 

  • Strong editorial judgement and decision-making under pressure.  

  • Deep expertise running breaking news in either text or visuals journalism, with a good understanding of the other disciplines.  

  • Experience of dealing with staff safety in hostile environments 

  • Experience managing diverse teams, sometimes across locations.  

  • Understanding of AI tools and their application in newsroom workflows  

  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.  

  • Commitment to Reuters Trust Principles of independence, integrity, and freedom from bias.
