Our Way

Datacom works with organisations and communities across Australia and New Zealand to make a difference in people’s lives and help organisations use the power of tech to innovate and grow.

About the Role

You'll be joining Datacom's Local Government Product Engineering team as an Application Engineer, contributing to the design, configuration, testing and support of solutions that underpin our ERP product, Datascape.

We’re a collaborative product engineering team that takes real pride in the quality of what we build and the difference it makes for the communities our customers serve.

You'll work within our platform to build sophisticated, enterprise-grade solutions for our customers, translating business requirements into well-structured, reliable product outcomes using our tooling. The role is technical, with a strong focus on solution design and product thinking.

This role suits people from a range of backgrounds, whether that's software engineering, business analysis or subject matter expertise in enterprise systems. What matters most is that you think in terms of solutions, care about quality and can work across both technical and business domains.

We want people who genuinely care about how software engineering is evolving, including AI-assisted development, automation and agentic ways of working. You don't need deep experience here but you should be motivated by how these approaches can improve the way teams build and deliver products.

Experience with ERP platforms is valuable, as is any familiarity with the local government sector. More broadly, we’re looking for someone who cares about building quality products and wants to keep improving how they work.

We like to bring people together in person when we can, but we also recognise the benefits of working from home for work/life balance. We leave it to you and the team you join to decide what works best.

NOTE: Our opening is based in both Auckland and Tauranga.

What You’ll Do:

As an Application Engineer, you will be focused on:

  • Solution design and configuration – design, build, configure and maintain product changes that meet business and customer needs.
  • Quality and testing – make sure changes are properly tested, reliable, and ready for release.
  • Deployment and release support – support the movement of changes across environments in line with agreed practices and change controls.
  • Documentation and knowledge sharing – keep technical documentation up to date and contribute to shared knowledge and team improvement.
  • Continuous improvement and emerging practices – help improve engineering ways of working, including the use of automation, AI-assisted development and agentic practices.

We are an agile company and are keen to respond to changing customer, technology, and internal stakeholder needs — which means our roles can evolve over time to meet those needs.

What You’ll Bring

Required experience and skills:

    • 2+ years' experience in software engineering, solution delivery, business analysis or a closely related technical/analytical role
    • Experience translating business requirements into system-level solutions within enterprise platforms or structured delivery environments
    • Familiarity with relational databases and data structures
    • Working knowledge of Git and source control practices
    • Comfort working with JSON, XML, SQL or comparable structured formats and tooling
    • Understanding of deployment processes, change controls, and working across multiple environments
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with good attention to detail
    • Ability to work collaboratively in large, cross-functional teams
    • Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
    • Strong time management skills and the ability to balance competing priorities
    • A strong sense of ownership and pride in delivering quality product outcomes
    • Interest in modern software engineering practices, including AI-assisted development, automation and agentic ways of working
    • Bachelor's degree in IT, Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience

Nice to have

    • Experience working with ERP platforms or related enterprise business systems
    • Familiarity with the local government sector, its business processes, or its regulatory and service delivery context
    • Experience in a SaaS, managed services, or shared service environment
    • Exposure to agile delivery practices such as Scrum or Kanban
