Job Description:
The Application Engineer supports the sales team and customers through the accurate interpretation of mechanical drawings, HVAC equipment take-offs, product selection, pricing, and proposal development. This role serves as a technical resource within the organization, ensuring that HVAC equipment is properly identified, selected, priced, and presented in accordance with project requirements.
The Application Engineer works closely with Sales Engineers, Estimators, Project Support, manufacturers, and customers to provide accurate and timely solutions throughout the sales process. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically curious, organized, and comfortable working with mechanical drawings and HVAC equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary:
  • Review mechanical plans, schedules, specifications, and project documents to identify HVAC equipment requirements.
  • Perform detailed equipment take-offs from mechanical drawings.
  • Identify equipment quantities, types, sizes, configurations, accessories, and applicable options.
  • Review equipment schedules and specifications to ensure proposed equipment meets project requirements.
  • Select appropriate HVAC products based on project requirements, specifications, performance criteria, and application.
  • Utilize manufacturer selection and pricing software to properly configure equipment.
  • Obtain and apply current factory pricing to equipment selections.
  • Prepare accurate and competitive quotes based on project requirements.
  • Develop professional proposals that clearly communicate equipment, quantities, product descriptions, accessories, options, pricing, lead times, scope of work, exclusions, clarifications, and applicable terms and conditions.
  • Provide technical and estimating support to Sales Engineers throughout the bidding and sales process.
  • Assist sales team members in understanding equipment applications, product differences, and selection requirements.
  • Work with manufacturers and factory representatives when additional technical assistance or clarification is required.
  • Identify discrepancies, missing information, or potential issues within project documents and communicate them to the appropriate team members.
  • Review proposals and equipment selections for accuracy, completeness, and consistency prior to release.
Additional:
  • Participate in manufacturer and internal product training to continually expand technical knowledge.
  • Stay current on new products, product enhancements, applications, and industry changes.
  • Develop proficiency with manufacturer selection software and tools.
  • Maintain an understanding of HVAC fundamentals, equipment applications, and industry terminology.
  • Track and prioritize multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Meet assigned quote deadlines and communicate potential delays proactively.
  • Maintain accurate information in company systems and estimating/CRM tools.
  • Assist in improving estimating, quoting, and proposal processes, templates, and procedures.
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation.
  • Help identify alternate products or solutions when appropriate.
  • Participate in project review meetings and assist with complex or high-value opportunities.
Experience and Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or similar required
  • Ability to interpret mechanical plans, schedules, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when working with large and complex construction documents.
  • Ability to learn and apply manufacturer-specific product knowledge.
  • Ability to learn and utilize manufacturer selection and pricing software.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Sales Engineers, Estimators, Project Support, manufacturers, and customers.
  • Understanding of HVAC fundamentals, equipment applications, and industry terminology.
  • Detail-oriented, technically curious, and organized.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing product training and technical development.
