JOB OVERVIEW:

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), through its Healthcare-Associated Infections/Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) program within the Division of Disease Control (DDC), oversees public health surveillance and response to infections associated with healthcare settings, including infections with multidrug-resistant organisms, contaminated medications, healthcare procedures, and devices. The HAI/AR Program also conducts educational activities to prevent and control the emergence of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance in Philadelphia healthcare facilities (HCFs).

The HAI/AR Program seeks a qualified individual to serve as an Antibiotic Stewardship Epidemiologist to analyze antibiotic prescribing data and to conduct outreach to healthcare facilities related to antibiotic stewardship education and quality improvement; assist in the tracking of associated grant deliverables and evaluation of program initiatives; and participate in core HAI/AR outreach, surveillance, and response activities as part of a multidisciplinary program.

This is a full-time position. A part-time option may be negotiable. This position is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional work after hours and on weekends may be needed to support Program activities. This is a grant-funded position; continuation of the position is contingent upon sustained funding.

This is not a remote role. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, talk, and hear. This job may require moderate physical effort, including lifting materials and equipment of less than 50 pounds, and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 50 to 75 percent of the time. The position may require responding to public health emergencies on short notice and some after-hours activities to achieve Program Objectives. This position reports to the HAI/AR Program Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyzing data from CMS, NHSN, regulatory agencies, and other sources to inform, target, and evaluate public health interventions related to antibiotic stewardship
  • Developing and running data reports on antibiotic stewardship and other HAI/AR data to inform public health interventions and to meet grant deliverables and metrics
  • Participating in the development of an antibiotic stewardship quality improvement activity (QIA) for LTCFs
  • Analyzing outpatient antibiotic stewardship data and conducting targeted outreach and education to high prescribers
  • Developing the annual CDC Antibiotic Awareness Week public-facing campaign for PDPH
  • Developing and distributing resources and educational materials to healthcare facilities and frontline healthcare personnel
  • Serving as a liaison between healthcare facilities, academic health system partners, other community partners, state health departments, and the CDC in regard to antibiotic stewardship
  • Presenting antibiotic stewardship and other HAI/AR content in meetings with facilities and key collaborators
  • Disseminating results of investigations through reports, presentations, and publications
  • Collaborating with the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH) and partners to improve HAI/AR surveillance and response
  • Participating in PDPH, PADOH, CDC, and partner organization HAI/AR conference calls, meetings, and seminars
  • Participating in infection control assessments and trainings in healthcare facilities and other ongoing programmatic activities as needed
  • Participating in HAI/AR outbreak investigations in Philadelphia as needed
  • Mentoring rotating fellows and students as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

SKILLS:

  • Able to conduct epidemiologic analyses on large data sets using SAS and Excel
  • Data management skills and familiarity with databases (REDCap)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Excellent English language skills, including composition, grammar, and public speaking
  • Experience with NHSN and Tableau preferred
  • Able to work independently and in teams to establish and convene meetings, prepare summary reports, and present findings
  • Research experience preferred, including publishing or presenting scientific manuscripts and reports

EDUCATION:

  • Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, or a related field required

EXPERIENCE:

  • 1 year of recent work experience or relevant training in public health or a related field required
  • Preferred: Training fellowship (e.g., CSTE fellowship) or relevant public health experience
  • Preferred: Research experience, including publishing or presenting scientific manuscripts and reports

SALARY:

  • Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, ranging from $60,000 to $70,000 annually for a full-time position.
