Role Purpose

As an Analytics Engineer in the Telematics Engineering team, you’ll play a key role in transforming raw telematics data into high-quality, productionised features that power pricing, underwriting, and data science workstreams.

Sitting at the intersection of data engineering and analytics, you’ll design, build, and maintain scalable data models and pipelines that enable teams across Hastings to unlock value from telematics data.

You’ll work closely with Data Engineers, Analysts, and Data Scientists, within a modern data platform (Snowflake, Azure, dbt) to deliver high-impact data products. These features directly influence pricing accuracy, risk assessment and the fairness of outcomes for millions of customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain robust, scalable data pipelines to process telematics (sensor/driver behaviour) data

  • Develop and manage feature pipelines to create curated datasets for pricing and modelling use-cases

  • Transform raw data into clean, reliable, and analytics-ready data models using SQL and dbt

  • Own datasets end-to-end, including testing, reliability and documentation

  • Optimise performance of queries and data models within cloud data warehouse environments

  • Support self-service analytics and feature engineering through well-designed data products

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the Telematics data ecosystem and feature engineering capabilities

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Advanced SQL skills (complex transformations, performance optimisation) and experience working with large-scale datasets

  • Hands-on experience with dbt (or similar transformation frameworks)

  • Experience with version control (Git)

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to data quality

Desirable

  • Experience working with telematics / IoT / event-stream data

  • Exposure to insurance, pricing, or risk modelling domains

  • Experience with Python and CI/CD practices for data processing and pipeline development

  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Azure, Databricks)

How You’ll Work

  • Collaborate to enable teams across the business to build meaningful telematics-derived features

  • Work in an agile setup, contributing to both ad-hoc and strategic initiatives

  • Engage with stakeholders across the business to translate requirements into technical solutions

  • Help shape best practices in analytics engineering within telematics

What We Do

Hastings Group is a fast growing, agile, digitally focused general insurance provider providing services to the UK car, van, bike and home insurance market. Big enough to compete but small enough to grow, the Group has strong relationships with all major price comparison websites, a cost effective digital marketing model and a focus on customer retention. Hastings provides refreshingly straightforward products and services to UK car, bike, van and home insurance customers. A multi-award winning business, Hastings has over 2.7 million customers and over 3,400 colleagues. The Group operates as an integrated insurance provider with two businesses. The Group’s Retail business, Hastings Insurance Services Limited, is responsible for the end customer pricing, fraud management, product design, distribution and management of the underlying customer relationships. The Group’s Underwriting business, Advantage Insurance Company Limited, engages in risk selection, underlying technical pricing, reserving and claims handling. Retail is supported by, and benefits from, Underwriting’s prudent approach to risk and reserving and also benefits from the Group’s panel of insurance partners who provide additional underwriting capacity. The Group’s integrated model deliberately separates underlying product manufacturing from its distribution.
