Inside the Role

Daimler Truck’s Powertrain Procurement team in Detroit is seeking a highly motivated Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) for aftertreatment emission system, semiconductor and electronics commodity. Join our team as a SQE and become an integral part of our visionary mission to revolutionize the commercial vehicle industry. The SQE will focus on implementing preventative, and reactive quality measures and capacity improvements to meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air and Resource Board (CARB) requirements through effective quality management and supplier collaboration. You will play a pivotal role in driving supplier quality improvement resulting in an effort to increase the supplier capability of consistently meeting existing, new customer and sub supplier requirements. Plan, direct, and strategize, together with cross-functional business partners to shape the future of transportation for powertrain components!

Position offers a starting salary range of $81,000 – $104,000 USD

Pay offered dependent on knowledge, skills, and experience.

What You Drive at DTNA

Aftertreatment Emission Systems, Semiconductor and Electronics Supplier Quality Engineer

  • Execute projects to identify and develop new aftertreatment, semiconductor and electronic technologies, strategies, and methods to support current and future powertrain programs
  • Support Daimler Truck powertrain plants aftertreatment, semiconductor and electronic suppliers strategy including localized production parts verification and technical support.
  • Provide technical data analysis to  Daimler Truck powertrain plants, aftertreatment, semiconductor and electronic suppliers strategy in support of government mandated EPA & CARB emission requirements.
  • Provide interface between engineering and aftertreatment, semiconductor and electronic suppliers concerning supplier quality and capacity issues, changes, and improvements
  • Responsible for quality performance to support on data collection and analysis to identify failure trends and collaborate facilitating this data cross functional teams
  • Investigate aftertreatment and electronics industry trends through competitive quality benchmarking, applying that information to set development directions and guide performance target settings.
  • Provide technical support for aftertreatment, semiconductor and electronics related concerns for both pre-production and post-production issues.
  • Lead Industrialization efforts as needed, to facilitate suppliers’ problem-solving efforts by providing feedback of root cause analysis and corrective action
  • Conduct part quality audits and trials at the aftertreatment, semiconductor and electronics components, subassembly, and Tier X suppliers to validate effectiveness of supplier’s implemented containment and corrective action to drive issues to closure
  • Implement change management for changes involving part design, packaging, processes at suppliers and powertrain plants by reviewing the changes and owning quality aspects of trials (participate in ongoing change control meetings as supply chain representative for the plant)
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives at aftertreatment, semiconductor and electronics suppliers to improve the part quality, production capacity while reducing/avoiding costs by reading across best practices and coming up with innovative solutions
  • Develop relationships with cross functional teams in order to understand technology developments, design changes and future business decisions within the global supply chain.
  • Negotiate or renew agreements to for quality based cost recovery to minimize Detroit Diesel exposure.
  • Manage cross-functional product teams to develop and evaluate long term proposals.
  • Interface with suppliers and Daimler Truck Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering to insure the timely and accurate communication of aftertreatment emission and electronics specifications.  Enlist supplier participation in design change considerations.
  • Develop long term strategies for capacity relief.
  • Interface with international suppliers and business partners to resolve supplier quality problems.
  • Provide support to all Parts Distribution Centers regarding supplier related Customer related issues.
  • Negotiate appropriate Aftermarket Requirements for Detroit Diesel products.
  • Evaluate alternative materials, methods, and technologies as necessary.  Evaluate alternate suppliers as necessary.

Knowledge You Should Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering with 3 years prior quality and/or supply chain experience within the international commercial vehicle supply base
  • 2+ years working for an international commercial vehicle company with demonstrated ability to connect and work across cultures and regions
  • Minimum of 24 months experience in Auditing
  • 6+ month experience with each of the following Automotive Quality Core Tools: Advanced Product Quality Planning & Control Plan (APQP); Production Part Approval Process (PPAP); Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA); Statistical Process Control (SPC); Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)., Measurement System Analysis (MSA), SAP, 5S and non-conforming material return(RMA). 
  • 2+ years of supplier chain experience within the commercial vehicle industry
  • 1+ year of quality experience in blueprint reading and fishbone/Ishikawa diagrams
  • 1+ year experience with Quality processes, documentation, and ability to make and interpret data-driven decisions.
  • 2+ years working for an automotive international headquartered OEM or supplier
  • Lean Six Sigma certification within last 10 years
  • Minimum of 24 months developing relationships with cross functional teams in order to understand technology developments, design changes and future business decisions within the global supply chain.
  • Minimum of 24 months negotiating with international automotive/commercial vehicle supplier base
  • Minimum of 24 months interfacing with suppliers and international based engineering teams and manufacturing engineering to insure the timely and accurate communication of specifications. 
  • 1+ year of experience with international automotive/commercial vehicle supplier warranty coverage
  • 2+ years’ experience evaluating alternative materials, methods, and technologies as necessary.  Evaluate alternate suppliers as necessary.
  • Ability to negotiate the most effective solution for Daimler Truck - including supplier commitments for pricing, warranty, engineering, manufacturing and aftermarket support.
  • Ability to organize and effective communication skills
  • Minimum certification of Six Sigma Green belt
  • 5+ years’ experience in Microsoft business analytics tools, SAP, AutoCAD and Minitab applications

Exceptional Candidates Might Have

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering with 3 years prior quality and/or supply chain experience within the international commercial vehicle supply base
  • 2.5+ years expertise in quality systems with commercial vehicle components in a relevant industry preferred.
  • German, Spanish or Hindi language skills would be helpful in the role but are not required
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools for procurement and supply chain management.
