Job Description
The Role
Bose Labs is seeking a creative, curious, and hands-on Senior Audio Systems Engineer to help create the next generation of audio experiences for consumer technologies.
In this role, you will explore new use cases, develop experience concepts, and create reusable audio technology platforms and system architectures that accelerate the integration and deployment of emerging Bose technologies in both Bose products and third-party experiences. You will work across acoustics, electroacoustics, digital signal processing, psychoacoustics, transducers, and system engineering to advance ideas from early exploration through technical validation and into product- or partner-development programs.
You will collaborate with researchers, engineers, product teams, and business leaders across Bose to identify opportunities, assess technical feasibility, define system architectures, and mature promising technologies for adoption through Bose consumer technology platforms.
This position sits at the intersection of research and product development. The successful candidate will be passionate about audio and music, comfortable working in ambiguous problem spaces, and able to combine rigorous engineering with strong perceptual judgment and creative experimentation.
Responsibilities
- Explore consumer needs, use cases, and experience opportunities, translating these insights into experience concepts, technical requirements, experiments, and evaluation plans.
- Define reusable audio-system architectures, interfaces, and integration approaches that enable emerging technologies to be applied efficiently across products, form factors, and partner applications.
- Design, tune, and evaluate prototypes and reference implementations across a range of consumer form factors, including personal, wearable, portable, embedded, and out-loud audio devices.
- Develop and evaluate signal-processing approaches that improve audio performance or enable new consumer experiences.
- Conduct acoustic and electroacoustic measurements of components, subsystems, and complete systems, combining objective data with critical listening and perceptual evaluation to guide technical improvements.
- Collaborate with engineers and researchers across DSP, controls, acoustics, electrical, mechanical, and software disciplines to optimize system performance.
- Define and evaluate requirements for audio components such as loudspeakers, micro-speakers, microphones, and related acoustic structures.
- Identify important system-level tradeoffs, risks, constraints, and opportunities early in development, and use experimentation to guide technical decisions.
- Present concepts, experimental results, recommendations, and technical risks through peer reviews, design reviews, written documentation, and stakeholder demonstrations.
- Provide technical leadership within cross-functional teams by framing ambiguous problems, guiding system-level tradeoffs, and establishing clear technical direction.
- Collaborate with Bose product, platform, and business-unit teams-and with external partners as appropriate-to mature promising concepts and support their transition into Bose products and third-party experiences.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, Audio Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Ten or more years of relevant professional experience in audio system development, acoustical engineering, digital signal processing, or consumer audio.
- Strong foundation in digital signal processing, signals and systems, acoustics, electroacoustics, psychoacoustics, and transducer fundamentals.
- Demonstrated experience defining audio-system architectures and balancing requirements across acoustics, signal processing, transducers, electronics, software, and mechanical constraints.
- Hands-on experience designing, integrating, measuring, tuning, and troubleshooting high-performance audio systems.
- Proficiency with MATLAB or an equivalent environment for measurement, data analysis, signal processing, or algorithm development.
- Strong critical-listening skills and an ability to connect perceptual observations with objective system behavior.
- Experience making technical decisions in situations where requirements, architectures, or development paths are not yet fully defined.
- Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to engineering specialists, business stakeholders, and audiences outside the immediate technical discipline.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical work across disciplines and collaborate effectively with researchers, engineers, product teams, and business partners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing consumer audio products or advanced prototypes involving headphones, earbuds, wearables, portable speakers, home audio, embedded audio, or other consumer devices.
- Experience with active noise cancellation, noise management, voice pickup, speech processing, beamforming, acoustic echo cancellation, voice activity detection, or related microphone-system technologies.
- Familiarity with loudspeaker and microphone design, lumped-parameter models, micro-drivers, ECM microphones, MEMS microphones, enclosure design, and acoustic porting.
- Experience using acoustic test and measurement systems from suppliers such as Brüel & Kjær, GRAS, Audio Precision, National Instruments, Listen/SoundCheck, or equivalent platforms.
- Experience implementing, integrating, or tuning algorithms on real-time DSP, embedded, or rapid-prototyping platforms.
- Experience transferring technology from an advanced-development or research environment into a product-development program.
- Experience collaborating with external technology partners or integrating audio technologies into third-party products and platforms.
- A background in music performance, recording, mixing, sound design, or another discipline that has developed highly trained listening skills.
Working at Bose Labs
