The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking an experienced accounting professional to join its Finance division as an Accounting Specialist. CMAP is a mission-driven agency serving 284 municipalities and seven counties across Northeastern Illinois, acting as the region’s comprehensive planning organization. As the region’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, CMAP manages a diverse portfolio of programs and projects supported by multiple funding sources and stakeholders.

This position is housed within CMAP’s Finance division and reports to the Accounting Principal. The accounting specialist supports the organization’s financial integrity by ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant accounting operations. Responsibilities include but not limited to accounts payable, managing the agencies accounting inbox, weekly payment processing, vendor maintenance and support, monitoring project and grant activity, reconciliations, and supporting month-end close processes in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements. The role also provides opportunities to expand technical expertise through hands-on work with CMAP’s enterprise resource planning system, Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365).

Collaboration and continuous improvement are central to this role. The accounting specialist works closely with colleagues across CMAP departments and with external partners to support effective financial management, transparency, and compliance. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to process improvements, optimize ERP functionality, and strengthen financial controls in support of CMAP’s regional mission.

CMAP is seeking a detail-oriented, collaborative professional with a strong accounting foundation and a willingness to learn. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 is preferred but not required. This role is ideal for someone eager to grow their technical skills while contributing to a mission-driven public-sector organization.

Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or GED required; Business or Accounting degree preferred. 
  • Minimum of 2 years AP experience as well as related field experience in accounting support work. 
  • Certified Accounts Payable Professional (CAPP) certification preferred.


Hiring Range is $47,826.46-56,196.07


CMAP employees work a reduced work week of 37.5 hours and a flexible hybrid work schedule at the Old Post Office located at 433 West Van Buren in Chicago, IL. This position is benefit eligible.
