Job Summary
Southern Company Services (SCS) currently has a position available in our Accounting department located at our corporate office in Birmingham, AL. This Accountant position involves performing analytical and accounting tasks to ensure the accurate valuation and reporting of materials and supplies inventory for Southern Company’s electric operating companies, as well as SCS, SNC, SPC, and GAS.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree with major or concentration in Accounting is required.
- Must have a minimum of 6 months professional accounting experience.
- An advanced degree or professional certification is preferred.
- Understanding of GAAP, FERC, SEC and other rules, regulations, and reporting requirements, as well as Company policies and guidelines.
- Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all organizational levels, across departments, and spanning multiple geographic locations of the company.
Primary Job Responsibilities
- Perform monthly financial close processes accurately and on time.
- Perform accounting activities in compliance with GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, including the preparation of reports, schedules, variance analysis, journal entry documentation, memos, and supporting explanations for each company’s financial statements.
- Monitor and reconcile assigned accounts for accuracy and appropriate financial statement presentation.
- Ensure accounting impact of inventory related transactions is appropriate, thoroughly documented, meets re-performance standards, and is easy to follow.
- Support Materials Accounting field personnel in ensuring complete and accurate accounting during physical inventories.
- Provide accounting support to Supply Chain and Plant personnel as needed.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated sound judgment and a commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to identify, recommend, and implement process improvements.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and build working relationships.
- Proficiency with Southern Company financial applications (Oracle, Maximo, and SOAR) is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of functions, formulas, and Copilot to streamline processes and improve operational efficiencies.
Other Requirements
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Extended hours and weekend work as required.
