Job Title: Accountant II

Job Status: Full-time

Job Summary: Under limited supervision, the Accountant II applies principles of accounting to analyze financial information and prepare financial reports by compiling information, preparing accounting and financial statements, preparing bank reconciliations and applying appropriate accounting control procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare profit and loss statements and monthly closing accounting reports
  • Compile and analyze financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts and document business transactions
  • Adhere to accounting and accounting control procedures
  • Monitor and review accounting and related system reports for accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare and review budget, revenue, expense, payroll entries, invoices and/or other accounting documents
  • Analyze revenue and expenditure trends and recommend appropriate budget levels and ensure expenditure control which includes monitoring department budgets and providing timely variance reports to managers to ensure projects expenditures as per budget
  • Resolve accounting discrepancies
  • Input and handling of financial data and reports for the financial systems
  • Maintain financial data bases, computer software systems and manual filing systems
  • Interact with external auditors in completing audits
  • Operate standard office equipment and use required software applications
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Financial and accounting software applications
  • Federal and state financial regulations
  • Navision Accounting is preferred

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications for program area and other applications, including Microsoft Office

Ability to:

  • Analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections
  • Meet deadlines, including financial reports to funders on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis as well as government reports
  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives
  • Facilitate meetings, ensuring that all viewpoints, ideas and problems are addressed
  • Interpret and apply policies and identify and recommend changes as appropriate
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment
  • Handle stressful situations and provide a high level of customer service in a calm and professional manner
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Accounting, Finance or related field

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience working in accounting, preferable in a non-profit setting, or any equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training approved by Human Resources

Working Conditions:

Hours: Normal business hours, some additional hours may be required

Travel Required: None generally required

Working Environment: Climate controlled office

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of accounting experience (preferably in non-profit)
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Experience preparing financial statements, profit and loss statements, and monthly close reports
  • Experience performing bank reconciliations, journal entries, and resolving accounting discrepancies
  • Experience preparing and reviewing budgets, revenue, expense, payroll entries and invoices
  • Experience interacting with external auditors and supporting audits
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Excel)
  • Familiarity with federal and state financial regulations
  • Experience with Navision Accounting
