POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary duties of the Professional Academic Advisor is the continuous advisement, tracking and support of a significant assigned caseload of students from enrollment through on-time degree/certification completion, ensuring that each assigned student has an up-date Student Success Plan, and intervening on a timely basis to maintain student enrollment and progression toward on-time degree/certificate completion.


CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage an assigned and significant caseload of students and provide academic, career, and personal guidance to promote progression, course success, retention, completion, postgraduate success, student satisfaction, and career goals;
  • Serves as the advisor for online and on-ground students;
  • Provides advising to undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Provide assistance and student support services in the Express Assistance Lab;
  • Serves as the Liaison between the Student Success Center and the Registrar's Office;
  • Assists the Student Success Center and Registrar's Office with class schedules and other responsibilities that directly impact the working relationship between the Student Success Center and the Registrar's office;
  • Advises the Director on policy and procedure changes that will improve the Student Success Center work flow and its collaboration with the Registrar's office;
  • Assess strengths and weaknesses in students' academic, career, and personal development by identifying factors that enhance or prevent academic progress, examine alternatives based on changing goals, academic progress or personal situation, and interpret non-cognitive assessment results to guide students to establish realistic academic and career goals, including an employment strategy;
  • Responsible for ensuring that assigned students remain on-track toward on-time graduation through proactive advising, and promotes student engagement through University life and campus involvement;
  • Monitor academic progress of students by analyzing progress reports from instructors, determine eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree, identify current and potential needs or problem areas; such as, study skills and tutoring, and help students access University resources;
  • Utilize the University's Early Alert and Support retention resources and other indicators of progress to assist students and faculty toward course and on-time degree/certificate completion
  • Communicate with student caseload systematically, frequently, and intentionally through multiple methods, including but not limited to face-to-face meetings, college- supported technology solutions, e-mail, and telephone;
  • Maintain a deep knowledge of assigned STU programs and services;
  • Solve issues related to student success, including referrals to resources within and outside of the University and track to ensure positive outcomes;
  • Complete an individualized Student Success Plan for every student in the assigned caseload via Ellucian's Academic Planning system, closely monitor and actively support each student's progression toward degree/certificate completion;
  • Work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the students and the University (peak registration and weekends if needed occasionally), including one evening per week and extended hours during peak registration. Schedule may require either some morning and/or some evening hours;
  • Communicate with faculty and students in need of accommodations and coordinate services to assist students with disabilities;
  • Prepare for and conduct New Student Orientation and Registration (NSOR) events;
  • Assist Career Services with Presentations and events;
  • Assist other members of the Student Success Center with cross training;
  • Assist all students with registration regardless of caseload and academic level;
  • Provide a high level of customer service to all members of the University Community;
  • Assist with the management of Student Success Software (ie. Starfish, Student Planning, Reporting);
  • Assist with University events that impact student success (i.e. graduation);
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Routine assignments are performed independently following University and departmental policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, education, or other discipline deemed relevant by the University; Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience in student services, proactive advising, and one-stop enrollment preferred
