What you’ll do as a MISO Intern:

  • Work with MISO’s Markets & Grid R&D teams to understand a real engineering or market challenge, define the research question, and explore possible solutions.
  • Run grid or market simulations using engineering and optimization tools, comparing different approaches to see which solution works best under real system conditions.
  • Analyze historical market or grid data to understand key patterns, evaluate new ideas, and help build recommendations that support more reliable and efficient market and grid operations
  • Attend community service events, intern socials, networking activities, and development programming to help you grow your confidence, build relationships, and understand MISO’s broader mission.
  • Wrap up the summer with a final presentation summarizing your project work, recommendations, and areas of impact.

We are looking for students who…

  • Are graduate students with PhD candidates highly preferred, studying Electrical Engineering or Industrial Engineering (Operations Research).
  • Have taken classes or done projects in power systems, optimization, electricity markets, renewable energy, operations research, or engineering modeling.
  • Are comfortable learning tools such as Matlab, Python, PSS/E, TSAT, VSAT, or optimization software like AMPL, AIMMS, Gurobi.
  • Bring strong analytical skills and enjoy applying math, engineering, or physics concepts to real‑world grid or market challenges.
  • Communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, and are excited to work on applied research that supports planning, operations, reliability, and market design.

To be eligible for the program, you must be available to start Wednesday, June 2nd, 2027 and continue through Friday, August 13th, 2027.  No VISA sponsorship opportunities, including OPT/CPT.
