Corporate Tools LLC Product & Tech

“Corporate Tools gives us the freedom to try new things,” said Senior Software Engineer Evan Guthrie. “The culture is very open to experimentation in tech and pivoting into new directions.” We have a flat organizational structure that encourages autonomy in problem-solving amongst individual contributors, which creates a rich environment for innovation. This environment is further nurtured by hackathons and “Locked and Coded” events. Software Engineer Grant Callant attributes the psychological safety he feels to Corporate Tools supportive ethos. “Leadership has created a safe and non-threatening environment where creativity flourishes,” Callant said. “The occasional stumble is viewed as an opportunity for learning rather than a failure.

Inside Our Work

Engineering is a team sport

Guthrie likens his role to a captain of a basketball team: “I’m on the court, but I also have leadership responsibilities,” he said. These days, the play he’s most excited about is a communications queue application project aimed at unifying customer service personnel into a single workflow. The efficient tool automates matching between clients and support staff, he said. In the team’s efforts to reimagine customer service, they must keep their eyes on the “ball”: customer data. “We now need to know why certain things happen,” Guthrie said. “This shapes our technology by pushing us to focus on observability.”

We’re friends with our coworkers here — we really care about our people. If you’re the type of person that likes to build without worrying about ancillary requirements or politics, you’ll fit right in with the team.

A day in the life of a software engineer

Yeck revels in the camaraderie at Corporate Tools, which he finds to be rooted in the cadence of daily work: a connective morning stand-up meeting followed by intensive focus and occasional chats. “One fun way we experiment with alternative ideas is running hackathons. Our most recent hackathon involved a race to solve a series of cryptographic puzzles: Along the journey, we decoded a written ciphertext, debugged a program written in a language we’ve never used at work and eventually uncovered the password to a virtual machine set up by one of our colleagues,” Yeck recalled. “The balance between focusing on work and having fun as a team is one of the best parts of working here.”

It isn’t uncommon to take extra time on a project to explore various approaches in pursuit of a more performant and reliable solution. It’s empowering to be able to explore our tech interests without fear of missing a deadline.

Professional bucket lists abound

When Callant asked what types of payments he should consider for a recent accounts receivable project, he was met with a compelling response: “The sky’s the limit.” He was thrilled. “The prospect of integrating cryptocurrency has been on my professional bucket list — this is the perfect opportunity,” he said. It’s not the first time Callant has received the green light to explore exciting tech. “Go for it” is another common response to his queries. “These responses reinforce the freedom and trust our team values, allowing us to push boundaries for the betterment of work,” he said.
