Mechanical Engineering Intern will support development of lunar deployment mechanisms, flight hardware, and ground support equipment at NASA Langley Research Center. Responsibilities include creating parametric Creo designs, performing preliminary structural sizing using beam theory and strength of materials, optimizing mass, and producing GD&T drawings and assembly documentation. The intern will communicate design decisions and present requirements, layouts, and plans to engineering and project management teams.

Designs, models, analyzes, documents, manufactures, and tests mechanical components and mechanisms for aerospace and spaceflight hardware. Responsibilities include creating CAD models and engineering drawings, performing sizing and design trade studies, preparing procedures and reports, guiding manufacturing, and supporting assembly, integration, and testing. The role collaborates with engineers, analysts, program managers, and fabrication teams while ensuring compliance with NASA drafting, acceptance, configuration-management, and spaceflight hardware standards.

Coordinates contract operations with program leadership, tracking activities, plans, reports, records, procurements, subcontracting, personnel, fiscal matters, travel, logistics, training, and equipment. Identifies operational issues, recommends solutions, supports process improvements, maintains stakeholder relationships, and ensures schedules, documentation, and spending align with program plans.

Lead system safety and hazard management for NASA flight research activities. Develop safety plans, maintain hazard databases and continuous risk management, analyze reliability and maintainability, facilitate safety working groups, support design and flight readiness reviews, and present risks to NASA management and safety boards. Apply FMEA and fault tree analysis to identify and mitigate hazards affecting personnel, hardware, and mission success.

Develops visual and written communications that translate complex scientific and technical information for diverse audiences. Creates print and digital materials, including reports, posters, presentations, newsletters, web graphics, social media content, and infographics. Supports research dissemination, education, outreach, marketing, public engagement, presentations, and organizational communications while coordinating multiple projects and collaborating across disciplines.

Provides mechanical engineering expertise in materials and processes and contamination control for sensitive spaceflight hardware. Responsibilities include developing contamination control procedures, assessing material selection and processing, reviewing hardware requirements, documenting technical work, and overseeing contamination prevention during assembly, integration, storage, shipment, and testing. The role supports NASA Langley Research Center onsite and requires expertise in aerospace materials, spaceflight contamination control, and hardware acceptance standards.

Provide on-site project planning, scheduling, risk assessment, reporting, and coordination support for NASA AFRC programs.
