How Digital Innovation Supports Caterpillar’s Dealer Ecosystem

When people think about Caterpillar, images of giant machines plowing fields and lifting heavy materials often come to mind, but few people realize how much digital innovation happens behind the scenes.

What Does Caterpillar Do?

Caterpillar is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, off-highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.

Building enterprise platforms that will support these operations for years to come requires more than technical skills; it involves real-world experience, perspective and the ability to execute.

That’s what Lloyd Fulton, senior digital deployment manager, brings to the table at Cat Digital, the digital innovation arm of Caterpillar.

Lloyd has spent more than 20 years in enterprise resource planning systems (ERPs) at Caterpillar, and his experience includes technical delivery, global transformation programs and dealer-facing leadership.

“I started hands-on, solving real system problems, and that grounding has stayed with me,” Lloyd said.

His primary objective in his current role is to turn strategy into something real that works for dealers and improves the customer experience. To accomplish this, he and his teammates rely on Microsoft Dynamics 3651, a suite of cloud-based business applications that combines customer relationship management and ERP planning capabilities.

According to Lloyd, what makes Microsoft Dynamics 365 different is that it’s built for evolution, offering room to be more iterative and connected to the wider digital landscape.

“This isn’t just about technology for technology’s sake,” Lloyd said. “It’s about getting value into the hands of dealers — faster.”

With Microsoft Dynamics 365, Lloyd and others on the digital deployment team have the opportunity to make a bigger impact on dealer operations and the customer experience while deepening their technical acumen in the process.

How Lloyd Built a Career in Digital Technology at Caterpillar

Lloyd Fulton
Senior Digital Deployment Manager • Caterpillar

What is your job title and main responsibilities at Caterpillar?

As senior digital deployment manager, I am the global leader for Dealer Digital Deployment at Caterpillar, which means I am responsible for leading the rollout of Cat® Converge Suite, our new dealer ERP platform built to work with Microsoft Dynamics 365, and Caterpillar’s global rollout plan for dealer digital and ERP platform deployments across its global dealer network.

My role focuses on defining and governing deployment strategy, standards and playbooks; leading global delivery across Caterpillar teams, Caterpillar dealers and system integrators; ensuring successful end-to-end deployment of enterprise resource planning and digital platforms, from solution design through go-live and beyond; and managing complexity across regions, ensuring alignment between global standards and local dealer needs.

At the end of the day, my job is to turn strategy into something real — something that actually works for dealers and improves the customer experience. In simple terms, I’m there to make sure the strategy doesn’t just look good on a slide but also lands properly in the real world.

Can you briefly walk through your career journey at Caterpillar and your experience with ERP systems over the years?

Today, I’m leading at a global level, bringing that full journey together to deliver platform-based ERP and digital solutions at scale, particularly Caterpillar’s newly created solutions Dealer ERP Platform based on MS Dynamics 365 called Cat® Converge Suite.

I didn’t start out in strategy decks and global programs. I started hands-on, solving real system problems, and that grounding has stayed with me. I’ve been with Caterpillar for over 20 years, and I’ve seen ERP from just about every angle.

Early in my career, I was deeply technical. My work involved Level 2 and 3 SAP2 support across elliptic curve cryptography, customer relationship management, secure deployment, media mix modeling, warehouse management, and security, as well as hands-on configuration, system upgrades and leading SAP CRM transformations.

From there, I moved into enterprise transformation. I was part of the global Caterpillar SAP deployment program, supporting order-to-cash and leading process and security workstreams. I also supported multiple dealer ERP migrations across SAP, DBS, Irium3 and Infor4 platforms. I then transitioned into dealer-facing and digital leadership, which involved managing IT relationships across more than 70 dealers in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

How Caterpillar Approaches Global Platform Modernization

How has your perspective on ERP systems evolved over your career?

Early on, I saw ERP as a technical system problem: configuration, integration and meeting requirements. Over time, that perspective has shifted significantly. Now, I see ERP as a business transformation enabler, not just a system; a foundation for standardization, scalability and data quality; and something that only succeeds with strong governance, adoption and change management.

“Go Live” might look like the big moment on paper, but in reality, it’s only the beginning. Experience teaches you quickly that success isn’t about the system working — it’s about the business being able to operate on it effectively.

What motivated your transition into Cat Digital and this area of platform work?

The move into Cat Digital was a natural progression for me, bringing together two areas I’ve built over my career: deep ERP expertise and deep, hands-on experience working with our dealers. Over the years, I’ve worked across multiple platforms and deployments, while also spending significant time directly with dealer organizations, understanding their systems, their operations and the real world challenges they face. What motivated me was the opportunity to bring those two perspectives together. Cat Digital, and specifically programs like Cat® Converge Suite, provide that opportunity at scale. It’s not just about implementing ERP; it’s about designing and delivering a product that truly works within the complexity of dealer environments.

What really excites me is being part of something that has long-term impact across the Caterpillar network. Cat® Converge Suite is a major step forward in how we modernize dealer systems, and it has the potential to leave a lasting legacy in how our dealers operate. For me, it’s the chance to apply everything I’ve learned from deep system knowledge to real dealer experience to help shape a solution that will define the next generation of our dealer ecosystem.

What stood out to you about Microsoft Dynamics 365 compared to other ERP platforms you’ve worked with?

Coming from platforms like SAP, Infor and Irium, what stands out with Dynamics 365 is its flexibility and extensibility, native integration with data, analytics and the Power Platform5, and a modular, cloud-first architecture.

For me, one of the biggest strengths is that it’s built for evolution rather than standing still. There’s room to move. You can be more iterative, adaptive and connected to the wider digital landscape. It offers faster adaptability to changing business needs and a stronger connection between ERP and the wider digital ecosystem.

Why do you believe this platform direction is important for the future of dealer systems?

Caterpillar’s dealer network is unique. Our dealers are independent businesses, each with their own systems, processes and ways of operating. At the same time, they all sell and support Caterpillar products and services and are looking to adopt the digital capabilities Caterpillar is bringing to market. That creates a real balancing act.

When every dealer operates differently, adoption of new digital tools and capabilities becomes slower and more complex, integration between systems is more difficult, and ultimately, it delays how quickly we can deliver value to customers.

A platform approach is critical because it helps address that challenge directly. It enables a consistent foundation across the dealer network while still allowing local flexibility where it matters. It also creates a shared data and integration layer, making it easier to adopt and scale new capabilities, as well as faster, more coordinated adoption of digital tools, analytics and future innovations.

This isn’t just about technology for technology’s sake. It’s about getting value into the hands of dealers — faster. By aligning around a common platform that’s still up to the dealer preference to adopt, we can reduce fragmentation, accelerate adoption and ensure that our dealers are able to deliver a more consistent, high-quality customer experience and do so faster. Ultimately, this direction ensures our dealers are not just keeping pace with change, but are positioned to lead in an increasingly digital, competitive environment.

How does your experience across multiple ERP systems influence the way you approach decisions today? What kinds of risks or challenges are easier to anticipate with your background?

Having worked across multiple ERP systems and large-scale deployments, I bring a strong understanding of where things typically fail and how to avoid it.

Key risks I proactively manage include underestimating data migration and data quality challenges; misalignment between global design and local business needs; gaps in governance, ownership and decision-making; and lack of focus on user adoption and change management.

Because I’ve experienced these challenges firsthand, I can identify risks early, structure decisions more effectively, and build solutions that are sustainable, not just technically correct.

How would you describe the scale and complexity of the work happening in this space?

The scale is truly global, and the complexity is significant. We’re operating across multiple regions and dealer landscapes, a mix of legacy systems and modern platforms, and large, distributed teams across Caterpillar, partners and dealers.

Each deployment is not just technical; it’s a business transformation program. What makes it unique is the combination of global scale, deep system integration and direct impact on dealer operations and customer experience.

Career Growth Opportunities for ERP Professionals at Caterpillar

What would you say to experienced ERP professionals considering a shift toward Dynamics 365? How does this work allow people to apply and grow their expertise in new ways?

For experienced ERP professionals, I’d position this not as a shift away from what they know but as a natural evolution of it. The core of ERP hasn’t changed; understanding business processes, data and how systems support operations remains absolutely fundamental. What Dynamics 365 and modern platforms do is extend that foundation into a much broader, more connected ecosystem. It allows professionals to apply their deep experience in areas like finance, supply chain and order management, while expanding into cloud architecture, integration, data platforms and end-to-end digital experiences. The key difference is the context in which that expertise is applied. Instead of working within a single ERP system, you’re now operating across integrated platforms — ERP, CRM, Commerce and data — more iterative and scalable deployment models and solutions that are continuously evolving rather than static. That creates a real opportunity for growth.

You’re not starting again — you’re building on years of experience, but applying it in a way that has greater reach and impact across the business. This requires stronger end-to-end thinking and places you closer to shaping future platform strategy, not just system delivery. For those willing to adapt, it’s an opportunity to step into a space where your ERP expertise becomes even more valuable because it’s combined with the ability to connect systems, data and digital capabilities into a single, cohesive platform.
