It’s a picturesque summer scene — one that many employees can experience firsthand, even on weekdays, thanks to the widespread post-pandemic adoption of permanent work-from-home initiatives. 

Yet, while remote work offers undeniable appeal, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution for success. Many companies have chosen to embrace a hybrid model, bringing employees back to the office at least part time. According to a 2023 report by Resume Builder, an estimated 90 percent of employees will have returned to on-site work by the end of 2024.

The future of finance: Block Proto Lead Thomas Templeton recently spoke with Built In to describe how his team developed the company’s new self-custody Bitcoin wallet, Bitkey. He said, “In the future of our global, digital economy, customers will demand ownership and control, and thus self-custody wallets will become the norm. It brings peace of mind, reduces dependence on any one company and puts customers in true control of their own money.”

 

 

Cloudflare is on a mission to build a better internet. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare have all web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, improving site performance and decreasing spam and other attacks.

In the news: Earlier this year, Cloudflare announced that it would open-source Pingora, a Rust framework used for building HTTP proxy services. The company shared online that it is collaborating with the Internet Security Research Group’s Prossimo Project to encourage more widespread adoption of Pingora. Its goal is to contribute to a safer and more resilient internet ecosystem beyond Cloudflare's own infrastructure.

 

 

The Aerospace Corporation is an architect for U.S. space programs, addressing the most complex challenges in space.

Always iterating: Aerospace designs and tests space technology to stay ahead of security threats, with some interesting product development plans — like a spacecraft built to be the centerpiece of hacking exercises. Senior Project Engineer Aaron Myrick told Built In last year, “Normally, we design a system, analyze how it could fail, then mitigate those things. Here we were developing a system that is designed to fail to a certain extent and then recover.”

 

 

Samsara’s Connected Operations Cloud enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness IoT data to develop actionable insights. 

Constant learning and development: “Our team gets to work on a wide range of technologies — from embedded software to big data to AI — to help customers with physical operations be safer, more efficient and more sustainable,” VP of Engineering Kelly Koskelin said. “Engineers have the opportunity to do short-term rotations that give them exposure to different parts of the platform and infrastructure. And with an annual learning and development fund, team members can supplement their education as they see fit.”
 

 

Remitly provides trusted digital financial services to its customers in over 170 countries across the globe.

Encouraging questions: At Remitly, engineers are encouraged to ask “why?” On the importance of asking this question, Director of Engineering Łukasz Nalepa told Built In: “There’s this notion that as we grow up, we are trained to lose that curiosity and honest interest in the true nature of things. We start to assume things, and with time, we stop asking this most crucial question. When I ask ‘why?’ to others, it usually unveils deeper, hidden context and has the potential to clear up numerous misunderstandings.”
 

 

Navan is an all-in-one app that makes travel and expense easy so customers can focus on being there, not getting there.

Competitive, yet supportive: Navan not only stands out for its technical innovations but for fostering an environment that promotes growth. Navan’s Melissa Kaganovsky told Built In: “Everyone at Navan believes we have the best product on the market and wants Navan to win, and we only do that if everyone at Navan wins. I have never been a part of a sales organization that is so competitive yet so supportive.”
 

 

BlackLine automates and controls financial close processes for midsize and large organizations.

Boosting connectivity: At BlackLine, ERGs are crucial for promoting connectivity and empathy. The inception of BlackLine Resources for Empowering Women in 2018 ignited a chain reaction leading to several employee-led ERGs like BlackLine Complexions, PEACE, BREW and BlackLine Veterans. 

 

 

Vorto.AI is an AI-driven autonomous supply chain platform, enabling businesses to be more economically and environmentally stable.

Raising the stakes: The New York tech scene consistently makes advances. This April proved no different, with Grow Therapy closing an $88 million Series C round led by Sequoia Capital.
