Ridesharing apps like Lyft and Uber are some of the biggest powerhouses of the gig economy. For many, driving for a rideshare company is either the main source of income or a good side hustle to put a little extra cash in their pocket.
However, with the price of gas rising, a good portion of that money earned goes straight into fueling up the car in order to work another shift. If a shift isn’t particularly busy, the amount of money drivers make might just break even or not cover the price of gas at all.
To combat this and help rideshare drivers keep more of that gas money in their pockets, GetUpside, a cashback retail technology company, partnered with Lyft on Thursday to offer cashback fuel promotions in the Lyft app. Lyft drivers can now earn up to 32 cents per gallon in cashback on fuel at over 25,000 stations nationwide.
“Gig economy drivers have really kept our communities moving throughout the pandemic. They’re driving as much as 75-100 miles per day, eating quick meals and snacks while on the go and often paying out-of-pocket. Today those drivers feel the effects of inflation even more keenly than ever, as gas prices peak and general consumables are more expensive,” Alex Kinnier, CEO of GetUpside, told Built In via email. “We’re proud to help ease the burden for drivers.”
In order to take advantage of the new perk, drivers simply need to open the driving app, pause incoming trip requests and navigate to participating stations. For Lyft drivers, personalized promotions from D.C.-based GetUpside range up to 25 cents per gallon; platinum and gold drivers earn higher cashback closer to 32 cents per gallon.
“With gas prices as high as they are, every dollar counts. That’s why we are so excited to be partnering with GetUpside to help drivers save on gas,” Zach Greenberger, head of strategic business development and global supply management at Lyft, said in a statement. “This program makes it easy for drivers to know where to get the best cashback savings on gas, meaning more of the money they earn with Lyft can stay in their pockets.”
GetUpside also partnered with Uber last year, giving its drivers 25 cents per gallon in cashback at the pump within the Uber Driver App.
These partnerships come after a record period of growth for GetUpside. In 2021, the company was ranked #2 on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 list. It also added 15,000 restaurants for users to get cashback nationwide and partnered with companies like Roti, Lunds & Byerlys and Schnucks.
In addition to new partnerships, GetUpside expanded its internal team to 250 people and opened new offices in Austin and Chicago.
