POSITION SUMMARY:
Assistant to the YMCA Reads! Coordinator, responsible for the direct supervision, safety and program curriculum implementation for an assigned group of children. Responsible for leading appropriate program activities consistent with the YMCA mission and values. Responsible for the cleanliness of all program areas.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Teach basic reading skills using lessons developed by the YMCA Reads! Coordinator using the Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) program.
- Mentor a child to enhance comprehension, vocabulary, and learn that reading can be fun using the Making Meaning curriculums, which expose students to a variety of literature that highlights the “big ideas” that are important to their lives.
- Be a positive role model and mentor. Supervise students, help maintain order, and positively confront inappropriate classroom behavior when necessary.
- Maintain necessary paper work: volunteer sign in and out logs, progress reports, etc.
- Conduct the YMCA Reads! Program in the event the coordinator is unavailable.
- Prepare program site daily including set-up, safety checks, maintenance, and clean-up of facility, grounds, and equipment.
- Use positive guidance methods (planning ahead, redirection, positive encouragement, and problem solving) when working with children on behavior concerns and character development.
- Maintain confidentiality of children, families and staff.
- Follow all applicable guidelines as set forth by the YMCA and the school system, and other contractual obligations.
- Visually inspect work area and equipment for safety and risk, report to Supervisor in writing any problems.
- Maintains positive relations with children, parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
- Supports The Y’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA), encouraging children, adults and families to adopt a healthy lifestyle and role-model the standards.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age requirement – 18 years of age.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Must have 1-2 years previous experience working with children.
- CPR, First Aid, & AED certifications required within 30 days of employment.
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
- Must be patient and enjoy teaching and tutoring.
- Complete YMCA of the USA New Employee Orientation e-learning course.
- Complete YMCA Policy and Procedures for New Employees within 60 days of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position will require sudden movements, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, running and lifting up to 25 pounds.
Skills Required
