The Role

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Job Description

As our flagship email newsletter, The Morning, expands its ambition, we are looking for a writer to join the team. The Morning is one of The Times’s most-read pieces of journalism.

We are looking for an entrepreneurial journalist to help craft one of the newsroom’s signature products, working in close collaboration with the entire Morning team.

This is a hybrid position preferably based in New York City or Washington D.C. and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • You will fact-check the stories and essays that run atop The Morning, keeping a fastidious focus on details and accuracy.

  • You will file reporting for Morning leads that senior staffers write (sometimes with a co-byline).

  • You will write clear, concise, lively, nonpartisan summaries of Times stories – we call these “the bullets” – for each day's newsletter prerequisites.

  • You will read the NYT report and other sources to help decide which stories should appear in the newsletter.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to one of The Morning’s editors.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience reporting or researching.

  • 1+ years of experience working on daily deadlines.

  • A strong familiarity with the basic storylines across a wide range of beats – you should be a close follower of the news.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience as an incisive and creative writer, with the ability to convey voice and personality in a conversational medium.

  • Experience working across multiple beats, including politics, international news, business/finance and beyond.

  • Experience adhering to rigorous editorial guidelines.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,049.64 and $125,000.00.

The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve.
