Workday Functional Lead: Graduate School

The Elevate Program is moving the University of Maryland Fearlessly Forward, leading the transition from legacy mainframe student systems to Workday Student. To achieve the program’s goals, the Graduate School is seeking a dynamic, highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as the Workday Functional Lead for the Workday Student Graduate School domain. This is a full-time permanent position in the Graduate School.
The Workday Functional Lead for the Graduate School is responsible for driving decisions related to design, configuration, and testing of business processes as well as providing policy recommendations and business requirements for the Workday configuration. This includes graduate admissions and deferrals, tuition remission, fellowships/awards, graduate assistantships, student records, degree requirements, policy waivers, leaves of absence, grievances, and the typical graduate student life cycle as relevant to the enterprise student information system.
This position will be a part of the Workday Student implementation team but will retain formal reporting within the Graduate School. As part of a broader cross-functional implementation team, the Functional Leads across units will collaborate and coordinate with key Elevate team

members to meet program deadlines and deliverables overseen by Elevate Program governance. They will also convey and represent the needs and requirements of their business unit.
This role reports to the Assistant Dean of the Graduate School. This role works closely with other Student Functional Leads, the Student Product Owner in the Division of Information Technology (DIT) and the Student Graduate School Workday Analyst (DIT). Following the Workday Student implementation the incumbent will serve as a member of the Graduate School advisory staff team and provide support to Graduate School staff and collaborators, evaluate upgrades, operationalize changes, support configurations, lead continuous process improvements, collaborate with DIT, and provide guidance as the Student Graduate School Workday expert.
This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergencies to help maintain continuity of university services.
Responsibility Areas Workday Expertise
Learn Workday Student processes & functionality and gain expert level knowledge of the Workday Graduate Student domain. Develop a deep understanding of UMD’s Finance and HCM processes that relate to the Student system. In particular, understand the changes, challenges and opportunities that the implementation of Workday Student will have in areas such as graduate student admissions, records, assistantships, tuition remission, degree requirements, and related operations.
Perform the duties within the below functions:
- Design: Understand and provide current state context to future state designs
- Campus Teams: Facilitate requirements gathering from campus
- Change Impacts: Change impact validation
- Decisions: Drive functional decisions for functional area within the project team
- Technical Workstreams: Participate in requirement drafting sessions for other workstreams
- Data Conversion: Validate data for data conversion
- Testing: Gather, document, and execute test scenarios
- Training: Prepare training materials

Minimum QualificationsEducation: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience in web and client server development. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of SQL Server or Oracle enterprise databases programming languages (SQL, PL/SQL, T-SQL), relational database structures, and UNIX and NT operating systems. Knowledge of application development in a full life-cycle environment, which includes systems analysis, development, deployment, and testing. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Google Office Suite. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.

System & Information Mastery: A comprehensive understanding of graduate technical systems and the specific information needs of the graduate community.

Immediate Operational Readiness: Thorough familiarity with the Graduate School staff, institutional business processes, and the unique administrative landscape.

Proven Leadership: Established relationships with the TGS, UMD master's, doctoral and certificate programs and a deep functional knowledge of UMD systems that facilitate their configuration and management.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands: Office environment setting with majority of time spent working at a computer. Required close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing computer terminals, extensive reading. Ability to move about campus to attend meetings/events.
