Description
Under supervision of a higher level Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist or other supervisory official, performs professional GIS work relating to the geographic analysis of environmental parameters and or/other factors, image processing, interpretation, and application of remote sensing data; performs geographic data digitizing; operates all computer hardware and software associated with the Geographic Information System; does related duties.
Specific to the Position
Assist in the development/use of data collected in the field using portable devices such as tablets, smartphones, and GPS units. Review spatial data submitted to the Department as part of the Watershed and Land Management permitting process. Prepare technical reports and communicate with applicants. Assist in maintaining the Watershed and Land Management website, as well as assist with the IT group.
Preferred Skillset
Knowledge of Python programming language and webpage management is preferred. Knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS software for both desktop-based systems and web-based applications is required.
Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.
Six (6) years of professional experience with geographic information systems, including computer graphics and computer hardware digitizing procedures.
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.
OR
Possession of a master's degree in Geography or Environmental Science including or supplemented by the additional credits indicated below; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.
OR
Possession of a specific bachelor's degree in Geography, Environmental Science or related field with twelve (12) semester hours in computer mapping/GIS which shall have included spatial programming and digital image processing; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.
NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
NOTE: All U.S. degrees and transcripts must be from an accredited college or university. All foreign degrees and transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized evaluation service by the closing date of this posting. Failure to provide documentation may result in ineligibility.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
