THE ROLE
The WIA Specialist is responsible for managing and advising on all matters related to the Dutch disability legislation (Wet verbetering poortwachter, WIA, WGA, IVA). The specialist ensures correct assessments, compliance, and end‑to‑end case handling for employees who experience long-term illness or reduced work capacity. This role combines legal expertise, case management, communication with UWV, and strategic HR support to minimize financial and operational risks for the organization.
Profile
- Performs all tasks associated with the WIA Specialist role, including reviewing and processing WIA decisions in various systems.
- Acts as a subject-matter expert and sparring partner for policy departments and case managers / HR managers at large Dutch clients.
- Advises client organizations on insurance and pension arrangements, including specific agreements per collective labour agreement (CLA) or employment conditions, and ensures proper execution.
- Provides guidance on complex legislation related to self-insured status (own-risk bearing) for WGA, Ziektewet en WW, requiring the ability to see connections and assess financial impact for employers.
- Advises case managers, HR managers, and line managers on specific cases, both by phone and on-site at client organizations across the Netherlands.
- Maintains daily telephone contact with the UWV to request information regarding unclear or incorrect decisions.
- Keeps knowledge up to date by attending UWV advisory board groups and employer meetings; represents Strada and several large Dutch clients at these sessions.
- Possesses strong communication skills to maintain effective relationships with institutions such as UWV, insurance companies, occupational health services, and pension providers.
- Has extensive knowledge of legislation such as the Sickness Benefits Act (ZW), Work and Care Act (WAZO), Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act (WIA), as well as applicable collective labour agreements.
- Guides the AOR process during the onboarding of new clients, ensures proper knowledge transfer to colleagues and functional analysts of the AOR system, and embeds processes within the organization.
- Serves as the team’s go-to expert on legislation and regulations, supporting colleagues in complex cases.
Minimum Requirements
- Excellent command of the Dutch language, both spoken and written.
- Based in the Netherlands, given the client base and participation in UWV advisory board groups.
- At least 5 years of experience in executing and advising on all aspects of WIA legislation.
- Strong knowledge of Dutch social security and disability legislation, as well as related areas such as dismissal law, WW, insurance, and pensions.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to maintain oversight and insight into complex matters.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Higher professional education level (HBO+) in a legal or employment law-related field.
- Good command of the English language.
