GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Wellness Supervisor, under the direction of the Director of Healthy Living is responsible for ensuring proper daily operations of the wellness center, free weight room, and Y Fit Gym. The Wellness Supervisor provides customer service, which promotes member wellness in accordance with the Mankato Family YMCA policies and procedures, creating a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – Wellness Coordinator:

  1. Set positive examples engaging with members on the Wellness Center floor.
  2. Reach a monthly goal of $1,500 in Personal Training sales.
  3. Promote YMCA  Personal Training and clients via internal and external marketing and social media that highlights noteworthy branded events  in the department (e.g, Trainer Tip Tuesdays, Monthly Wellness bulletin board, Personal Training Testimonial board)
  4. Develop new initiatives and strategies for marketing our Personal Training program, while including current promotions. Continue to promote group personal training sessions/ongoing classes.
  5. Develop and promote new motivational programs and contests for members, such as weight lifting and healthy eating challenges that aid in member retention. 
  6. Work in the group fitness department and instruct 2-3 classes/week that fit into the fitness schedule.  Sub in the group fitness department when needed.
  7. Complete tasks in a timely manner, meeting all deadlines, and report progress to supervisor in a timely manner.
  8. Schedule, supervise and train in Personal Trainers, Wellness Attendants, and Interns. Assist desk staff in subbing scheduled shifts for the wellness floor--find a substitute in a timely manner for clients or shifts, when needed.  Fill-in/sub for desk staff for their shifts when needed.
  9. Build and maintain positive rapport, and professional relationships with members while circulating the Wellness Center floor, speaking with all members regularly, and equally.
  10. Communicate knowledge of Wellness Center equipment and exercise recommendations, answer member questions or concerns about fitness and exercise as needed, and assist in equipment set-up.
  11. Develop, implement, and instruct personal training and/or group training sessions for clients; provide encouragement and expertise for the client in support of their health and wellness goals.
  12. Provide up-to-date and correct health and fitness information, and excellent quality service to members, guests, and participants.
  13. Provide quality wellness coaching for members through “Fit Start” appointments (body composition, flexibility, etc.), and promote Personal Training through these appointments. Participate in instructing various programs which may include Adult and/or Youth Fitness Consultations and Exercise Equipment Orientations.
  14. Communicate knowledge of Wellness Center equipment and exercise recommendations, answer member questions or concerns about fitness and exercise as needed, and assist in equipment set-up.
  15. Communicate and enforce policies and guidelines for the equipment area along with keeping this area safe, clean, and functional.
  16. Administer, track, and evaluate health history questionnaires, fitness assessments, and other pre-participation documentation with regard to individual exercise programs. Schedule client/member appointments via phone or in person, reschedule client appointments, track client appointments.
  17. Adhere to all guidelines and expectations as outlined in the YMCA Fitness Center Staff Manual, and as outlined by the Director of Healthy Living.
  18. Encourage members to participate in health and fitness programs such as personal training, small group classes, specialty classes, group exercise classes, and special events or fitness challenges, etc.
  19. Attend staff meetings and staff trainings.
  20. Assist desk staff in subbing scheduled shifts for the wellness floor--find a substitute in a timely manner for clients or shifts, when needed.  Fill-in/sub for co-workers on their shifts when needed.
  21. Participate in cleaning procedures to keep the Wellness Center as clean and professional in appearance as possible.
  22. Follow all program policy and procedures, including Child Abuse Prevention Policies.
  23. All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Required: Nationally Accredited Personal Training Certification such as Personal Trainer Certification ACE, ACSM, NSCA, NASM, ISSA, AFAA, and/or degree in Exercise Science or related field.
  2. Recommended : Group Fitness Certification such as: NETA, ACE, YMCA Group Fitness and/or other nationally recognized certifications.
  3. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications within 60 days of hire (YMCA provided).
  4. Formal training in the specialty class being taught and/or ability to demonstrate the movements and exercises appropriate for Personal Training clients.
  5. Preferred at least one year experience and/or Bachelor’s degree preferred in Health/Exercise Science or related field.
  6. Must have flexible schedule; available mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
  7. Positive attitude with excellent customer service, communication, and listening skills.
  8. Friendly and outgoing personality.
  9. Ability to interact and build relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  10. Must have a strong interest in health and fitness and be committed to the YMCA goals and mission.
  11. Never convicted of any child abuse, including sexual abuse.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to lead assigned sessions, demonstrating exercise techniques and protocols, and perform associated physical activities.  Must be able to perform all physical aspects of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50lbs at a time.  Ability to work in noisy and busy environment.

Skills Required

  • Nationally accredited Personal Training Certification (ACE, ACSM, NSCA, NASM, ISSA, AFAA) or degree in Exercise Science or related field
  • Group Fitness Certification (NETA, ACE, YMCA Group Fitness or other nationally recognized)
