The Burnes Center for Social Change at Northeastern University advances real-world impact by teaching individuals and institutions the skills needed to design and implement innovative and equitable solutions to society’s most complex challenges. Job Summary

This is a 1-year fixed-term position; renewal is based on available external funding.

The Burnes Center for Social Change seeks a Web Developer responsible for developing new webpages and maintaining high-impact websites, including InnovateUS, Reboot Democracy, and Power at Work. The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrate strong project management capabilities, and work collaboratively with a team of accomplished changemakers. This role requires expertise in modern front-end development technologies, experience with content management systems, and the ability to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines while maintaining exceptional responsiveness and agility.


Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • Develop new webpages and website features for major Burnes Center digital properties, including InnovateUS, Reboot Democracy, and Power at Work.
  • Create and maintain project pages within WordPress.
  • Build new website functionality, including project galleries, course listings, tagging systems, search capabilities, and content filters.
  • Implement website features using JavaScript and TypeScript.
  • Develop user interfaces using React, Vue.js, HTML5, CSS3, jQuery, and related front-end technologies.
  • Maintain and enhance website styling with an emphasis on writing scalable and maintainable CSS.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to rapidly deliver web projects in a fast-moving environment while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Implement Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards to ensure websites and applications are accessible and inclusive for all users.
  • Support web application development and back-end services built on cloud-based infrastructure platforms.
  • Utilize repository, deployment, and version-control platforms such as GitHub and Netlify.
  • Work with content management systems, including headless CMS platforms such as Directus.
  • Evaluate, learn, and adopt emerging technologies and front-end frameworks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 to 4 years of relevant experience working with HTML, CSS, React and/or Vue.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, and jQuery.
  • Experience working with Directus CMS.
  • Experience in web application development.
  • Experience developing back-end services on cloud infrastructure platforms such as DigitalOcean.
  • Experience working with repository and deployment platforms such as GitHub and Netlify.
  • Ability to implement website features using JavaScript and TypeScript.
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical-thinking, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated project management expertise.
  • Proven ability to work in a highly responsive, agile environment and deliver projects within tight deadlines while maintaining quality.
  • Interest in and ability to learn new programming languages and technologies as needed.

Preferred

  • Experience implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards.
  • Experience working with WordPress CMS.
  • Experience working with headless content management systems.

Expected Hiring Range:

$76,335.00 - $107,823.75

With the pay range(s) shown above, the starting salary will depend on several factors, which may include your education, experience, location, knowledge and expertise, and skills as well as a pay comparison to similarly-situated employees already in the role. Salary ranges are reviewed regularly and are subject to change.
