Lightmatter is leading the revolution in AI data center infrastructure, enabling the next giant leaps in human progress. The company invented the world’s first 3D-stacked photonics engine, Passage™, capable of connecting thousands to millions of processors at the speed of light in extreme-scale data centers for the most advanced AI and HPC workloads.
Lightmatter raised $400 million in its Series D round, reaching a valuation of $4.4 billion. We will continue to accelerate the development of data center photonics and grow every department at Lightmatter!

Lightmatter is (re)inventing the future of computing with light!
About this Role
We are hiring an Intern for our Platform Software team at Lightmatter! We are a photonic computer company redefining what computers and human beings are capable of by building the engines that will power discoveries and drive progress in a sustainable way. With modern human progress relying heavily on computers, the world has hit a dead end with traditional transistors, and the prospect of constantly building data centers is an environmental nightmare. Lightmatter has created a solution in photonic computing: using photons instead of electrons to take advantage of their higher bandwidth. We build chips for artificial intelligence computing. Our architecture leverages the unique properties of light to enable fast and efficient inference and training engines.
Responsibilities
- Develop UI and user experiences for Lightmatter’s photonic systems.
- Work with senior UX engineers to ensure a consistent and engaging brand experience.
- Evaluate and select frameworks for product development and UX tech stacks.
- Build applications and prototype demos using React and Next.js.
- Implement Next.js features, including server-side rendering (SSR), static site generation (SSG), and dynamic data fetching.
- Write clean, maintainable JavaScript code following modern frontend development best practices.
- Integrate databases and related programmatic interfaces for UX-driven applications.
- Contribute to CLI development as part of UX-related tooling.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team, gaining exposure to cutting-edge frontend and UX technologies.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a Computer Science or related engineering university program.
- Proficient in JavaScript (ES6+) and React.
- Exposure to Next.js and its core concepts (SSR, SSG, dynamic routing).
- Familiarity with databases and API integration.
- Eager to learn and contribute in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Detail-oriented, with a strong focus on performance, usability, and accessibility.
- Team player, comfortable working in a cross-functional environment with engineers and designers.

What We Do
Lightmatter is a startup photonics company that has pioneered a new paradigm in processor chip architecture that uses photons instead of electrons. Now the leader in the photonic AI compute “space race,” this new class of high performance semiconductors is the foundation of Lightmatter’s mission to enable the growth of computing, reduce harmful emissions associated with this growth, and democratize computing for all.
Lightmatter's technology accelerates critical operations in deep neural networks, using an array of programmable photonic elements fabricated alongside transistors in conventional computer chip fabrication processes. Our close-knit team of engineers has created an integrated photonics chip and ultra-high performance interconnect that is faster, more efficient, and cooler than anything else on earth (or anything ever experienced before) to power the next giant leaps in human progress.
