Graduating seniors should apply to WSJ News Associates.
Applicants should be excited at the prospect of scraping poorly formed websites, reviewing massive datasets, analyzing satellite imagery, geolocating and chronolocating videos and photos, and digging through public records, including FOIA requests. You will have the opportunity to pitch editorially strong visual journalism, which may include data-driven interactives, maps, charts and explanatory graphics, as well as help experiment with AI-powered reporting workflows.
You will:
Contribute reporting, data analysis, open-source reporting and visual verification to ambitious investigative projects and quicker-turn visual stories.
Work cross-functionally with reporters and editors across the newsroom
Be immersed in audience-first visual storytelling that aims to reveal critical information through maps, video, satellite imagery, and interactive graphics.
Gain hands-on experience analyzing large datasets and utilizing open-source intelligence (OSINT) to verify digital evidence and uncover hidden truths while maintaining rigorous editorial standards.
You have:
An analytical approach to journalism, with experience cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing data to support reporting.
The ability to scrape and mold unstructured data using tools like Python, R and SQL.
Familiarity with JavaScript, D3.js, 3D modeling, animation, video editing and open-source reporting techniques such as geolocation, video and photo verification is a significant bonus.
Completed at least one prior reporting internship with another professional media organization or published exceptional data or visual or open-source investigative work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.
You should be a self-starter with a collaborative mindset who understands the needs of our audience across multiple platforms and is able to work independently under deadline pressure. Dedication to high journalistic standards and excellent reporting skills are required. A demonstrated interest in business reporting is a plus, though prior business/finance reporting experience is not required.
HOW TO APPLY:
Please upload one PDF document (max. 5MB). Your application should contain:
- A cover letter that highlights why you would be an asset to that desk.
- Your résumé.
- Three examples of your data, OSINT and visual investigative reporting work (including links to interactive projects, published graphics, or code repositories), outlining your role and/or contribution.
The deadline to apply is October 31 at midnight Eastern time. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.
Internship timing: 10 weeks between June and August.
Only finalists will be contacted. We will review applications on a rolling basis and strive to make selections by the end of January.
