Purpose:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced U.S. Controller to join our finance team at Athene. The U.S. Controller will lead a team of 11 and be responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, product onboarding, and reporting for our domestic insurance subsidiaries, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and providing strategic financial guidance to support the company's growth and profitability.Accountabilities:
- Oversee finance integration of new product initiatives, ensuring comprehensive stakeholder engagement across finance functions. This includes establishing robust infrastructure, processes, and controls to support Athene's ambitious growth targets by scaling new opportunities from inception to a significant portion of Athene’s inorganic volumes
- Support implementation of GAAP standalone legal entity audited financial reporting for domestic insurance subsidiaries to support additional registered product opportunities
- Oversee GAAP audits for separate accounts, broker-deal audit, and the benefit plan audit and ensure successful audit execution and resolution of issues
- Serve as the U.S. Finance Officer responsible for finance support of the Funding Agreement-Backed Note (FABN) program and registered insurance products, including quarterly offering memorandum updates and new issuances, in coordination with Legal and Distribution leadership and external auditors
- Champion the enhancement of financial reporting and operational processes through the implementation of automation initiatives and advanced finance technologies. This effort supports Athene's commitment to innovation and efficiency, aligning with its position as a leading retirement services company
- Lead U.S. statutory reporting for five insurance entities, including three separate accounts, ensuring timely and accurate filings and annual audits
- Present statutory financial results to the U.S. Board of Directors and U.S. Audit Committee for each insurance entity
- Oversee Risk-Based Capital (RBC) reporting, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory standards
- Provide executive-level U.S. Finance oversight of regulatory examinations in collaboration with Legal
- Represent Athene in regulatory and industry forums, advocating on key financial and regulatory issues and helping shape external dialogue; expand the team's engagement and influence in this area
- Serve as primary liaison with state insurance departments on financial and regulatory matters
Qualifications and Experience:
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3+ years in a leadership role within the life and annuity insurance industry.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, statutory accounting principles, and regulatory requirements specific to the insurance industry
- Proven ability to lead and develop a high-performing accounting team
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present financial information to senior management, company boards and external stakeholders including regulators, auditors and outside counsel
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems; advanced Excel skills required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA certification required
