ROLE SUMMARY
Reporting to the SVP, Strategy & Consulting (S&C), this role serves as the strategy lead for Pfizer’s International Commercial Division (ICD) which consists of the commercial functions and corresponding P&L in all ex-U.S. markets. ICD includes key standalone markets (China, Japan, Germany and France), International Developed Markets (IDM) and Emerging Markets (EM). In addition, ICD includes key above-market organizations, such as the International Commercial Office (ICO), Medical, Policy and Communications, Access, and Business Transformation. The S&C team’s role is to shape, develop, and enable execution of strategies that will deliver growth for ICD over the mid- to long-term. The VP leading this team serves as the primary strategy contact for the Chief International Commercial Officer, and their leadership team, and is part of their Extended LT.The role has four main accountabilities:
1) Facilitate development of International Commercial’s strategic plan and roadmap2) Manage a portfolio of strategy projects to address key business priorities and opportunities across markets, TAs, and strategic functions3) Provide insights into market and competitive dynamics that impact business performance or strategic direction4) Lead a team of strategy colleagues who will support these projectsROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Partner with the Chief International Commercial Officer, their leadership team, and relevant functions to develop strategies across ICD. Identify key strategic imperatives and capabilities required to achieve these imperatives.
- Facilitate completion of in-year and multi-year strategic plans, as well as implementation plans that enable robust execution of these strategies. Support the annual divisional operating plan process, as needed.
- Lead or actively participate in a portfolio of projects that provide insight and direction on key levers such as market evolution, customer needs assessment, patient segmentation, competitive advantage, market and/or product prioritization and go-to-market model. Actively analyze and translate impact of these levers into appropriate financial measures (e.g., revenue growth, margin, ROI, etc.)
- Provide perspectives on the potential impact of external market and competitive signals that could impact future business performance.
- Develop and apply expertise in international market dynamics across relevant Therapeutic Areas, Disease Areas, and products to identify trends and opportunities to enable the strategic direction of the International Division.
- Develop external relationships that provide valuable outside-in perspectives on key aspects of the remit, scope and priorities of ICD.
- Collaborate with other S&C leads to identify cross-Pfizer alignment opportunities or synergies across strategic initiatives.
- Actively participate as a member of the Strategy & Consulting leadership team, helping shape the priorities and direction of this critical function.
- Lead and manage a team of 10-12 colleagues (incl. people managers), coaching and developing them to build capabilities and deliver exceptional performance. Create an engaging, productive, and balanced work environment where team members are encouraged and motivated to collaborate and excel.
- From time to time, manage and provide oversight and direction to teams from external strategy consulting firms.
- MBA or other advanced degree with 13+ years of experience, or BA/BS with 15+ years, including experience in the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry. Understands trends in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, aware of competitor strategies, knowledge of healthcare dynamics across major international markets, and understands key aspects of drug development, commercialization, lifecycle management and business development processes.
- Ability to influence and persuade key stakeholders at all levels of the organization (ELT, Country and Regional Presidents, senior functional leaders in commercial and beyond, etc.).
- Ability to simultaneously lead a broad and complex set of strategic initiatives sponsored by ELT and ELT+1 leaders and be able to effectively connect the dots/ identify synergies across initiatives.
- Strong learning agility and able to understand the nuances of different TAs/DAs, products/franchises, and regions/markets to deliver rigorous and tailored solutions.
- Demonstrates strong strategic thinking skills, as evidenced by the ability to identify and develop relevant strategic frameworks, alternative scenarios, analyze implications, and develop recommendations for direction or action.
- Ability to understand and translate market and competitive dynamics into strategic implications for Pfizer’s international business and bring a growth mindset to key strategic projects.
- Strong understanding of finance and P&L implications of any strategy.
- Personally fluent with the latest AI tools and skilled at driving adoption of these tools across project teams to enhance the speed, rigor, and creativity of strategic work.
- Ability to work with complex information (both quantitative and qualitative) and distill into frameworks that help facilitate ideation and decision-making.
- Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization and lead/drive alignment without direct authority.
- Exceptional communication/presentation skills and executive presence sufficient to effectively address ELT members, functional leadership, and external audiences.
- Life sciences or healthcare-related degree helpful.
- Prior experience in strategy consulting strongly preferred.
