Formlabs develops accessible Low Force Stereolithography (LFS) and selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printers.
The Role

To reinvent an industry, you have to build the best team. Join Formlabs if you want to bring ground-breaking professional 3D printers to the desktop of every designer, engineer, researcher, and artist in the world.

We are seeking a VP of Material Strategy & Operations who will join our leadership team and drive the global execution and strategy of the materials we provide to our customers.

The Business: Formlabs has three main pillars (hardware, software, and materials) that provide value to our customers and investors. The materials portion represents the highest revenue and margin stream today and is rapidly growing. Materials allow us to expand existing user applications, enter new industries/markets/applications through unique mechanical properties, and create long-lasting partnerships with our customers through our recurring revenue business model.

The Operations: As our materials business expands (volume, SKUs, chemistries and printing technologies), we must evolve how we manufacture and distribute these products worldwide. This likely means increasing our global partnerships, adding additional wholly owned manufacturing sites, identifying how vertically integrated each supply chain step should be, and defining how to be the global leader in executing the supply chain.

The Technology:  Formlabs is a technology company that innovates to provide value to customers in all three pillars of our business.  To successfully lead the materials function, technology (chemistry, automation, software, etc.) must be at the core of building, running, and differentiating our supply chain.  This includes building state-of-the-art manufacturing processes, partnering with the top chemical providers, and bringing new/unique chemical capabilities to our markets.  Although iterative change is nice, we seek someone to lead transformational changes through technology and innovative chemistry.

The Opportunity: On our path to becoming the largest 3D printing company in the world, including the most significant materials capabilities, we have and will continue to find adjacent business opportunities to expand our capabilities to drive new revenue and profit streams into Formlabs. This leader will be at the forefront of identifying these opportunities and building a business plan to deliver high-impact results.

You Will:

  • Report to the Chief Operating Officer
  • Build a multi-year strategy to expand the capabilities and product offerings Formlabs can supply to customers
  • Lead the operations of all materials-related production sites, partners, and supply chains
  • Build a technology roadmap to drive efficiencies and capabilities into the supply chain
  • Expand our global footprint, partnerships, and capabilities
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional organizations responsible for material R&D investments and hardware product requirements to support new material capabilities and go-to-market strategies
  • Propose initiatives that grow revenue and improve margin while unlocking new market opportunities through cost structures and chemistry

You Have:

  • An MBA or equivalent experience
  • A background in chemistry
  • Experience driving operational excellence in a chemical supply chain
  • Run a global, multi-site manufacturing network
  • Developed strong vendor relationships and negotiated contract terms effectively
  • Developed new manufacturing methods/procedures
  • Developed and executed a multi-year strategy to evolve material or manufacturing capabilities

Bonus Points:

  • If your material manufacturing experience is with powders or resin polymers
  • If you have insourced or outsourced chemical production capabilities
  • If you possess familiarity with the 3D printing market
  • If you have led global teams
  • If you have been a leader in a high-growth 3D printing or chemical company

Our Perks & Benefits:

  • Robust equity program to build future wealth through RSUs
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage (Medical, Dental, Vision)
  • Low-cost fund options in our 401K and access to advisors
  • Generous paid Parental Leave (up to 16 weeks)
  • Tenure-based paid Sabbatical Leave (up to 6 weeks)
  • Flexible Out-of-Office Plan – Take time when you need it
  • Ample free on-site parking & pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Healthy on-site lunches, snacks, beverages, & treats
  • Regular sponsored professional development opportunities
  • Many opt-in culture events across our diverse community
  • And, of course, unlimited 3D prints

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Please apply if you check only some boxes but see yourself contributing.  Help us build an inclusive community that will change the face of 3D printing.
